2014/2015 CYAA Summer Series Race 1 next week and other news

2014/2015 Summer Series

1. One week to go. That’s all there is

As that never forgotten Classic songstress, Miss Peggy Lee, still asks us. “Is that all there is”. Take heed of her words and insight to the forgetful side of the human condition. Our 2014/2015 Summer Series is only one week away. That’s all the time available before the first race. To all our Classic Yacht skippers, do the right thing by your true friend and submit a 2014/2015 Summer Series entry. The handicaps for all our Classic fleet are all set to go and are looking for their entries.

2. Summer Series entry date.

The Summer Series Notice of Race and entry form have been attached to help skippers get to the task. Entries have to be received by Friday morning at the latest. The conducting club, HBYC, requires our race documentation by Friday morning for distribution to their race officials.

3. Sayonara cup holders Frances and Sayonara Competing

This 2014/2015 Summer Series will be big. Thanks to Peter Johns who engaged Ferdy Darly to revitalise Frances, the glamour queen of Australia’s International 8 metre racing fleet, and to the Sayonara Syndicate who have kept the most prestigious and important Australian Classic Yacht, Sayonara, in racing trim, we’ll will have 2 of Australia’s most prestigious International 8 Metres and Sayonara Cup winners, racing with us some time during the series. The first time these former Sayonara Cup holders will be racing against each other. Don’t forget our regular International 8 metre Cruiser Racer Marie Louise III will be in the mix of these International 8 metre classics.

4. Big chance for fame

Not only that but all entrants to the 2014/2015 Summer Series will be in there with them. Not as bystanders either but actively racing against them. This series will be to opportunity for each skipper in the series to knock off the most prestigious Classic Yachts in Australia.

5. A dark force descends on the Summer Series

No doubt with all this great theatre on the water that force of darkness, the handicapper, will have a foreboding presence in the wings.

6. Summer Series Race management

rmysThe next big 2014/2015 Summer Series item to announce is that to support the Associations RMYS based members and to extend the Classic Yacht racing experience around Port Phillip, Classic Yacht racing has returned to the Squadron. Since our 2013 Cup Regatta and through the agency of our RGYC based member, Bill Chittenden of Cardinal Puff, work has been on going with the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron Racing Administrator, Alicia Rae, to re-establish the CYAA racing presence at RMYS. Our first race at the Squadron will be Race 2 on Oct 19 at 10:30am and a second series race early in 2015. The CYAA pennant presentation and other conduct of race formalities with RMYS will take place next week. The courses to be raced over are described in the RMYS Sailing Instructions 2013-2016 Version 5 Every chance it will be course 7 or 8.

7. Look your best for race 1.

One other event of note to take place during Race 1 will be the presence of Mark Chew in the HBYC Chase boat. Mark will be taking images of Classic Yacht Racing as part of his preparation of the Classic Yachting on Port Phillip montage. This was the montage that was successfully auctioned off for the Association by Jeff Richardson of the Couta Boat C97 at the 2013 Cup Regatta social functions. For skippers unable to be on the water that day pass your favourite image of your Classic Yacht racing with the fleet to me.

8. A Summer Series wish

Once again we can only hope we have a full 8 race series. One small note the NoR attachment has now corrected the date for Race 3 to be November 16.

Submit those entries and prepare your Classic Yacht for her best when striking a pose for Mark.

2014 Cup Regatta

cupregAn International Classic Yachting Event

1. Cup Regatta Notice of Race and entry form

Attached is the 2014 Cup Regatta Notice of Race and entry form. The Regatta organisers have passed a vote of thanks to Jeff Richardson skipper of C97 for his assistance to prepare the Notice of Race.

2. Regatta invitational events

The Regatta starts on the Friday afternoon with two sets of 3x 20 mins races. One set for the Guineas Invitational and one set for Inter Association Trophy. Last year tight racing by all teams was the feature. Less than a minute separated the 6 Inter Association teams racing the RYCV Elliots. Bud Nalder the New Zealand sail maker is again sponsoring the Inter Association trophy with one of his hand made Classic Gear bags.

3. Cup Regatta racing program

The Regatta racing program will be a passage race on the Saturday with an option for 2 races on the Sunday followed by a pursuit start on Monday. The results of all Cup Regatta races will determine the aggregate points score and winner of the Stradbroke II and Col Bandy Trophies.

4. Cup Regatta on shore activities

Arrangements are happening for the Friday Cocktail reception on the Friday and the after race Summer Series Commencement BBQ at the RYCV. The Cup Regatta entry form can be used to indicate your intentions to attend these functions.

5. Cup Regatta berthing arrangements at Docklands

The Regatta fleet will be berthed at Docklands courtesy of the Melbourne City Marina. A marina that allows great socialising between all the Regatta skippers and crews before and after racing.

6. Cup Regatta Cours d’Elegance

While berthed at Docklands and thanks to Karen Batson of Zephyr, the COOKIE Beer Hall, food and disco will be sponsoring the assessment by our CYANZ visitors of our Docklands Cup Regatta fleet for an example of what entrant best represents Classic Yacht racing in Victoria.

7. Cup Regatta. An International Classic Yacht racing event

Our Cup Regatta has moved up in the international world of Classic Yachting. We have a New Zealand team coming over to take on the Victorian Classic Yacht fleet. Under the management of Tony Blake, the members from the Classic Yacht Association of New Zealand have entered Mark Chews Fair Winds to compete with our local fleet.  Visiting CYANZ members will also compete for the Trans Tasman Trophy. The organisers of the CYANZ visit, Cameron Dorrough and Iain Valentine, will visit the dark vaults of time to retrieve the formula that determines the recipient  of this trophy

8. Cup Regatta and International 8 metre racing action

The Cup Regatta will see the Classic 8 metre yachts Frances and Sayonara being joined Col Andersons Acrospire III.  These 3 yachts will be complemented by the International 8 metre cruiser racer Marie Louise III.

9. Handicapper’s Cock of the Cup Regatta.

While the talk is 8 metres let’s not forget Cup Regatta fleet and their aspirations to knock off an 8 metre. An off the record analysis of the aggregate points score will be conducted to determine if there’s a Cock of the Cup Regatta. That is the boat that was the best performer over the 8 metre boats by handicap improvement. Leave the formula to figure this one out to the handicapper.

2014 RYCV Lipton Cup Regatta

1. And there’s more to come

For those members of the CYAA that want to continue with Regatta style racing after the Classic 2014 Cup Regatta there’s the Lipton Cup. Scheduled to run on November 15 and 16 the Regatta organising committee has made a special division for Classic Yacht entrants.

image0102. Dual entry and handicap assignment opportunity

The Deal is, as well as a Classic Division open only to CYAA registered yachts, the Cruising Spinnaker or non spinnaker divisions are also open for entries from CYAA yachts with a single division entry fee. Entries are through the Lipton Regatta Top Yacht web site. Classics entering the Cruising division will receive a separate handicap to that of the Classic division. Classic division handicaps will be supplied by the CYAA and adjusted for the second race by the Lipton Regatta handicapper.

 3. The Classic Summer Series and Lipton Regatta combined

Now here’s the bigger deal. As we now know Race 3 of our Summer Series is scheduled for November 16, the second day of the Lipton Regatta. As well, HBYC, who are scheduled to conduct Summer Series Race 3 are also scheduled to start the Lipton Regatta cruising/classic division. What will happen is that as the Cruising and Classic Lipton divisions all in start together, the Classic Summer Series entrants that are non Lipton Regatta entrants will join in with the Lipton Regatta Cruising and Classic Divisions start. Classic Summer Series handicaps supplied by the CYAA will be applied to all the Classic Summer Series entrants.

For some Classic Yachts they could be racing with 3 separate handicaps in the one race. How about that.

4. Why the combination of fleets

This start set up for November 16  will allow the Classic Association to maintain their summer series schedule and allow ensure those CYAA members who are Summer Series entrants and who also wish to take part in the Lipton Regatta don’t miss out.

5. Organisation of the fleet combination and race start time

This race start arrangement for Nov 16 has been set up for the Classics by the RYCV Race director David LeRoy. One small point is that the race will start at 10:00am and be a longer course that the usual Classic Sunday races.

CYAA Magazine Issue 35

1. It’s in the mail

Issue 35 is now in the hands of the postman. All financial members of the CYAA will receive their copy on Monday. As much as I would like to provide a story of what’s inside it won’t happen. I remember in my early CYAA membership days the anticipation as to what made up the magazine contents. I’m sure this is a similar story for many CYAA members. So no Issue 35 content details or page one images. It’s in the mail

2. CYAA Magazine Production Team and it’s story

What can be said about Issue 35 is the effort the Magazine team put into in. Roger Dundas, skipper of Avian, who has collected and prepared content  for many CYAA magazines knew that although off set printing produced a high quality product. Print run volume flexibility was needed. Not an offset printing feature. Conversion of pre print images to Pantone© colours was a nightmare. Jennifer Cook, Roger’s forward hand on Avian,  drove the change to the digital printing of our magazine. As well as print run count control the magazine is now digitally templated using Adobe InDesign. This means we now have the big preparation time saver due to automation of the magazine pre print processes and transfer of image to print in true colour. One additional benefit of this improved magazine digitization process is that presentation of content for proof editing by our CYAA member and Cambridge university accredited proof reader, Roz Edmond, is far less erratic.  Without the work of Roz, our magazine would not be accepted as a document of record by the State Library of NSW, also a CYAA member.

3. Call for content

Content for issue 36 is being prepared. Now’s the time for members to submit articles or share their stories on subjects in whatever form that are connected to the world of Classic Yachting either in Australia or global.

4. Magazine posting in the CYAA Web site

CYAA Magazine issues 33 and 34 are to be cleaned up using the Indesign template and installed on our web site.

1. What’s it about

Below is a copy of the publicity the Association from the Maritime Heritage of Victoria people.

Classic members are being asked to help out with needed financial assistance to keep the Alma Doepel rebuild going.

2. The event

The dinner and presentation is scheduled for Friday October 3. Half the function fee goes to RYCV for the meal. The other half to the Alma. During the evening there will be other fund raising events, marine paintings for example.

3. Intentions to attend

The CYAA encourages their members to assist with this Alma fund raiser. Any member that intends to take up the offer let’s know. With sufficient numbers, 10 maximum, as we can do a CYAA table. The RSVP has been extended a couple of days for the CYAA people.

4. The CYAA connection

As well as the CYAA now having, through the support of Peter Johns, Frances back in racing condition, a legacy of Captain Michael Wood who also saved the Alma, the CYAA racing activity will be promoted to organisations unaware of the importance of the CYAA activity to retain a fleet of actively raced Australia Maritime Heritage vessels.

Finito

No more for now. Next week will be the pre race notes for the first race of our 2014/2015 Summer Series. Cheers to all and keep the words as told to us by Miss Peggy Lee in mind and submit your Summer Series entry

2014 Fair Winds Trophy

2014 Marie Louise III Constistency Trophy

With consistent participation and performance throughout the 2014 Winter Series, Bungoona, rewarded Cameron Dorrough for his management of her high maintenance needs, with a last race performance to hold off the Tumlare’s of Zephyr helmed by Anne Batson and Avian helmed by Roger Dundas under the expert direction of Pip Todd and took out the Rusty Shackle Trophy for the best overall performance in the 2014 Classic’s Winter Series on Port Phillip.

image003

Zephyr (r.) and Avian (l.) 2014 Classic Winter Series 2nd and 3rd

The Fair Winds Trophy

Awarded to the best performing Victorian Classic Yacht over the 2014 Calendar year. Avian the 2013/2014 Summer Series winner of the Locker 57 Trophy was in the mix to take this trophy home. But Bungoona with her consistently lower 2014 Winter Series scores prevailed to take out the Fair Winds Trophy. The Tumlare’s Zephyr and Avian took out the 2nd and 3rd placing for this trophy.

Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy

The handicaps that evolved from the Race 5 results were used to determine the points used for calculating the Race 6 points score and aggregate for the Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy. Again it’s Bungoona time followed up by Avian and Ettrick.

The Tumlaren Trophy

With the ever evolving numbers of Tumlare’s competing in the Classic racing series the time has arrived where the Classic Tumlaren Trophy needs dusting off. After competing in every race over the two 2014 series of races plus notable performances in the Cup Regatta passage race and passage sailing through the Port Phillip chop in darkness to compete in the 2014 Geelong  Wooden Boat Festival passage race a more worthy receipient of the Tumlaren Trophy couldn’t be found.

For the year 2014 the Tumlaren Trophy has gone to Zephyr now skippered by Anne Batson and crewed by Karen Batson.

Sept 7 Race 6 comments

This Winter series reflected the strength of Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip with 28 entries from all the top end yacht clubs on the bay.  Corrected time honours were shared across with fleet with Martin Ryans Mercedes III, the team from the family Purcell with Scimitar, Bob Munro’s Tandanya, the Sayonara syndicate with Dave Allen on the helm . The two well deserved 1st placing by Clive Moulday’s Blackadder were noted down for analysis by the handicapper.

One feature of the 2014 Winter Series was although we lost two races for lack of wind, the high count turnout by the fleet to race on these days with no wind conditions indicates our skippers and crews hear the Sirens call of Classic Yacht racing loud and strong. Close corrected time results when all starters have a fair wind were also a feature of this series.

The last race on Sunday was to be the series decider between Bungoona and Zephyr so the test was on to give both a fair chance. With Mark R3 ashore, a tanker to berth at Breakwater around 11:30am and light winds ruling out no shipping channel crossing courses, the RYCV course 31 was selected as the best fit for a 95 minute on course average. However, when George Low’s Tum Snow Goose was observed lee gunnel down pre start manoeuvres, Oh no was the thought, but too late to change the selected course.

image004

Richard MacRae reported 18 knots across the deck of Claire

A fleet of 21 starters lined up and the chase was on for 20. Blackadder lead the fleet with Clive Moulday in charge on the helm in her favored conditions. That was the last seen of her till she took out line honours by 4 ½ minutes over Renene, with John Neve as her skipper and on the helm with expert directions being received from  Lester  Wise. Shows what happens when her skipper Kent Bacon is  sweltering in France and Spain, those mice can sure play up. Doug Jenkin had Bluejacket moving well, particularly after a snap of a kite set after rounding mark 80. This on the ball kite set kept them ahead of Bungoona, who also was busy playing with their kite,  by 2 seconds on the finish line. On Tandanya, Bob Munro’s acute Top Mark tactical observations and directions to Stephen Lake on the helm chased down to lead Joe Tuck and the boys on Loama by 30 seconds across the line. George Low pushed Snow Goose hard to be the first Tum home and lead Gordon Tait and Heide on Ettrick by a minute and 30 seconds.

The hard working crackerjack crew on Marie Louise III in the shape of Alex Howard, Brian Smith and under the observation of the handicapper kept Peter Lloyd on his toes  as he rounded Mark D with Avian, held off Michael McTavish who put Serifa under kite and then led Claire, under the gentleman helm of Richard Macrae, by 5 seconds across the finish line.

image005

Sayonara, under full rig and set to go

Under full rig, Sayonara was all power to pick up 10 minutes and to come in 20 seconds over Martini on her welcomed return to classic racing under the helm of Ross Clark. Zephyr picked up 2 minutes to follow Martini in by 4 seconds and lead Jim Hutchinsons Dingo by 12 seconds who in turn held off Phil Atkins, after his hold the nerves start incident, on Trim by 17 seconds.  Roger Dundas kept Avian out of the clutches of the fast finishing Fair Winds by 2 minutes while a battle went on with Boambillee keeping ahead of Kingurra by 8 seconds and Mercedes III bought the fleet home 2 minutes 43 seconds after Kingurra.

image006

Kingurra, eating up the fleet

Under directions from the Race Director, Dave Wallace, the start of the day was awarded to Bungoona. An on the money start at full speed was the comment from the start box.

In addition to the sights of the fleet leaders disappearing to RMYS Mark D while the 4 back markers stooged around for their start sequence, two additional sights of our members were noted: the Tumlare’ Vahine with Andrew Godwin and family were sailing in company with the fleet and Anthony Wilmott was busy preparing Huia for some work. Huia is the H28 we all admire on the walkout on the RYCV Marina.  A soon too be new member from RYCV, Jason Quick with his Williams Atkins Snow Goose, identical to Renene, that is under rebuild work by Ferdy Darly was also on hand at the RYCV after the race.

Actual and corrected on course time results for Race 6

Although not part of the results, the actual and corrected time results are required for computing the Marie Louise III consistency race points. An attachment has been included to show the on course and corrected times of each starter. Kingurra led the fleet with the least on course time followed up by Sayonara and Fair Winds. When the  fleet actual on water times were run against the handicaps used to calculate the group start times Sayonara came out on top followed by Blackadder and Marie Louise III. Close indeed is the word.

Helpers for CYAA Sponsored BBQ at 2014/2015 Summer Series Race 1 October 5

The organiser of all the Classic’s after race BBQ’s, Roger Dundas, won’t be available for the Summer Series 1st race opening day BBQ. Karen Batson, of Cookie Resturant fame, has stepped up to conduct the proceedings . Karen is asking for volunteers to cook, collate the numbers of supplies and to collect and store the supplies the day before.

Hold the presses.

Cup Regatta goes international.

News from New Zealand tells us Fair Winds will be raced under the New Zealand flag with skipper and crew from CYANZ with Tony Blake as manager of the challenge. This Trans Tasman challenge has transformed the Cup Regatta. Are we ready? Yes we are!!

Classic Yacht racing at Sandringham Yacht Club

Today this advice was received from Phil Atkins, Trim, our SYC Based member  at the Sandringham Yacht Club.

The 2014 SYC Centenary Regatta was a great event for the Classic’s in Classic Port Phillip conditions.

AUSTRALIA DAY RACE 24th JANUARY.

This is a 12.00 start on the Saturday of the long weekend for boats not going to Geelong. The number of entries in the other divisions are steadily increasing each year they run this event.

There will be a number of pens available for any boats which would like to stay the night and go on cruising Sunday and Monday. There will be food etc available in the members bar or the BBQ’s are available for use at any time. Will need to get all this organised with the club if there is enough interest / entries.

It would be good to get the Couta boats along to this event but I think they have other activities planned that week end.

CENTENARY CUP 18th OF APRIL

Same format and trophy’s as last year, hopefully better weather so every one can stay for the presentation and drinks.

2014 Winter Series Wrap up

No doubt a massive year for the Classic Yacht Association with consistently high participation numbers of members Classic Yachts yachts racing in the Summer and Winter Series. Congratulations must go out to all the skippers and crews of our Classic Yachts for all the time and effort to keep the real winners racing. Our Classic Yachts. For Cameron and his Bungoona to play such an important role with the promotion of our Classic Yacht Racing and to sustain our Associations race operations credibility to all the senior yacht clubs on Port Phillip and Corio Bay’s, again, a special congratulations . On reflection you sure to be sure the spirit of Bungoona’s previous owner and our late and great mate Col Bandy is somewhere in the works to give Bungoona the message.

Three cheers for Bungoona and her skipper Cameron Dorrough.

Three cheers for our late and great mate, Col Bandy.

Your handicapper says thanks to all the entrants of both series of our 2014 Port Phillip racing and especially for the effort and encouragement that make those handicaps happen. We now look forward to a full book of entries in our 2014/2015 Summer Series and 2014 Cup Regatta.

Entries for the 2014/2015 Summer Series are now rolling in.

The Cup Regatta Notice of Raceand entry form will be sent seperately. To many attachments with this mail.

Galatea

Previous messages on the progress of the restoration our Tumlare’ that used to race with us have been published. Today this was part of the latest message received from her owner Bahadir Salem on Bodrum Turkey.

Galatea is now ready for her journey  home  to Thessaloniki – Greece from where she went trough a total re-fit  in IBC Yachting boatyard in Bodrum-Turkey . She will be loaded on Monday to a truck and arrv. in Greece  on Wednesday and finally meat the sea again after Swan River – Perth . This has been a long Journey both in Distance and time. One that almost took 14 months !  But Looks like a worth one.

The Hull has been Epoxy – Eglass coated  with Multi axle Glass Fibre at 550 gr/sqm bottom layer and 300 gr/sqm triple axle top layer to stop the movements between the planks and isolate the wood from water to keep her hull in a healthy condition.

The hull from the interior has been Epoxy painted in 4 layers to also isolate the wood from water . This has to be redone every 2 years going forward.

The deck has been re-leveled with Marine plywood and a new deck with Burmese Teak at top Quality has been laid. Chalking used is Sikaflex.

Old superstructure remains in place but a new one from Mahogany has been made on top of it to give more strength. The black lines that are seen between the mahogany wood are inlays of African Ebony wood (they are not Sikaflex chalking).

New Harken Winches , deck organizers and Jam Locks are installed.

The Rudder has been made stronger by Installing a double sided Stainless steel  316L grade  Sheet that goes under the first Rudder Pin.

All the  Varnish and Outside paint is International Brand.

The equipment on the mast has been totally removed and the mast has been re-varnished in 12 coats. The stainless steel equipment has been re-polished and the Sail Rail has been replaced.

These are more less what I can remember but I’m sure there was  more but not less!

I will send pictures. Hopefully this coming weekend  her under sail  🙂

Cheers

2014 Winter Series. Race 6 Pursuit Race group start times and Sailing Instructions

Attached are the Group start times and Sailing Instructions for the final race of our 2014 Winter Series.

The pursuit start race is scheduled to start at 10:30am at the RYCV Marina start box and will be conducted for the Association by Dave Williams of the RYCV.

The group start times have been calculated using the handicaps developed after Race 5 and a crystal ball forecast mid fleet race duration of 95 minutes.

With only 6 races held over the 2014 winter series the aggregate points score is compiled with no worst score drops.  The forecast light winds will see the series decided by some tight racing drama throughout the fleet.

Although we avoid racing on significant days of the year the Association has to fit in with the calendar our race conducting clubs.  That’s why we are conducting the last race of the series on Fathers Day. Considering the family obligations of those Association members who need to leave immediately after this Sundays race, we will hold over our end of our 2014 Winter Series  CYAA  sponsored BBQ and trophy presentation till the first race of the 2014/2015 Summer Series BBQ,  October 5. Our regular after race get together with an optional BBQ is still on.

Also attached is the documentation announcing our 2014/2015 Summer Series of races and the series entry form.

Two new features of this entry form are the return to racing being conducted for us by the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and the requirement for all entrants to have their vessel details listed on the Top Yacht data base.  The requirement will eventually extend to crew details. This Top Yacht requirement is the start of a process to bring the Association’s racing conduct procedures into line with our members home club race conduct and results management procedures.  The Association will still manage the race handicap calculation process.

On a social note, members including Roger Dundas, Avian, and Phil Atkins, Trim, attended the Royal Society of Victoria lecture on the life and achievements of Matthew Flinders. Streets and buildings plus the name for this continent, Australia, are a continuing reminder what he achieved for us.

The Association also had a noted presence at the recent City of Melbourne Regatta to celebrate the first landing of settlers in Melbourne.

That’s all till Sunday at 10 :30.

Regards  to all

CYAA 2014 Winter Series Race 5 Aug 19 Results and Series Aggregate Points Status

CYAA 2014 Winter Series Race 5 Post Race Notes

Attached are the 2014 Classic winter Series Race 5 results plus the Series Aggregate points and Marie Louise III consistency trophy score status.

A “Tight on the line start” was the word for today’s race.   A quick look down the line at the pin end from Mercedes III showed a fleet of 17 Classic Yachts, all powered up ready to hit the line on the gun. Shamrock, closely followed by Bungoona led the fleet across the line with Kingurra powering through the fleet.

image002

Shamrock and Bungoona playing hard

image003

Loama with Joe Tuck and the boys were in there as well.

After that it was “get that heady in” time on Mercedes IIISayonara, with her 14 attendants, was at the committee end of the line and threw early to chase the river outflow. Good move till the wind shadow and no tops’l got them.

image004

“Get that heady in” time on Mercedes III

When the race results were announced, congratulations  and cheers went up with the news that with spot on team work by Clive Moulday and his consistent crew Blackadder was bought home in great style to take out first placing on corrected time.  Today’s performance by Blackadder was a reminder of those days when she took out the Classic’s 2003 Winter Series and second in the 2004 Winter Series. Bob Munro’s Tandanya took out first in 2004.

Blackadder on the march to first on corrected time

Line honours went to working hard team on Kingurra with Mercedes III executing some fancy manoeuvres to pick her up. Not to be.

Kingurra with her team working hard at the top mark to take line honours

Kingurra with her team working hard at the top mark to take line honours

With a consistent 15 knot South Easterly breeze over a 6.9 NM  course, tight corrected time grouping were a feature of today’s results. Indicative of this was the first two, Blackadder and Loama, on corrected time without spinnakers and the lowest on handicap while the next two placing by Kingurra and Mercedes III with spinnakers, and the highest on handicap were separated by 52 seconds on corrected time.

In between all this we had 42 seconds on corrected separating the Tumlare’s of Avian, with a massive performance improvement under the helm of our much welcomed international member and now NZ resident Pip Todd and Zephyr.

Avian under the helm of Pip Todd

Avian under the helm of Pip Todd Free at last

19 seconds separated the Tumlare’s of Snow Goose and Dingo as well. Mid fleet we had 19 seconds on corrected time separating Trim, Serifa, Shamrock and Bungoona with Tandanya following by 66 seconds. Martini on her first race for a while was 28 seconds over Renene and Bluejacket was 13 seconds over Sayonara.

Sayonara playing catch up over Dingo

Sayonara playing catch up over Dingo

Under these ideal racing conditions those Classic Yachts whose handicaps are based on consistent use kites show they have to be used with spot on crew work to feature against those yachts whose handicaps are based on non use of spinnakers.

So all up another great day of Classic Yacht racing, with Andy Indrans of Corio Vertue on taking photo’s of the fleet. When available they’ll be posted. http://www.andy.indrans.com/CYAA/ If copies are wanted contact Andy at apindrans@gmail.com

Thanks to the HBYC Race committee for sending the fleet on it way with a decent windward beat to the first mark.

For the series aggregate result,  we have a situation where the overall series placing’s revolve around how 5 yachts place in a pursuit race, the last race of the series. Pressure on the handicapper for sure. The pursuit race dart board and crystal ball will be locked up. After a close analysis of previous pursuit race results what decision making tool will be used by the handicapper this time?

As mentioned with the announcement of the results at the RYCV today it was noted there’s a problem for some of our members with the final race date. Sept 7 is Father’s Day. RYCV and HBYC have ORCV race conduct commitments on August 31. Being an ORCV Winter Series reserve date, August 31 may become available but we won’t know till Aug 25. Too late for a change of race date to Aug 31 notification. Bringing the RMYS back into our group of YA keel boat clubs used to conduct our racing will help resolve this messy date clash

Our 2014/2015 Summer Series

Notice of Race and entry is all set for issue. First race Oct 5.

Some other dates to note are on August 28 where the Royal Society in Melbourne are presenting a free lecture about Matthew Flinders on the 200th of his passing.

On August 30 there’s the City of Melbourne Regatta at Docklands as part of the celebrations to not the establishment of Melbourne. Today we received the attached Sailing Instructions for this event from Jeff Gordon, operator of the Melbourne Showboat, the Lady Cutler. Jeff has asked the Association to put in a special effort to help make this Regatta an notable event.

Some other news. The Alan Payne designed and multiple Sydney to Hobart performer, Terra Nova, previously owned by Rob Pierce, a Kinglake fire victim has found a new home at Lakes Entrance and  Aerial a Laurent Giles Normandy design that was rescued and restored by Richard Morrison was seen smartly sailing alongside the fleet as they approached the RMYS A Mark on Sunday.
