Passage Race Sailing Instructions
Ammendment No. 1

ammdWhat is a passage race without a log of on water events that took place during the race?

To assist resolving this question your Race Director has issued an ammendment to the Passage race Sailing Instructions. This ammendment has been included into Part 8 of the Passage Race Supplementary Sailing

Instructions and reads as follows:
Section 8 Item 3
All starters are required to log the Time of Day when rounding course marks of the assigned course. Logs to be submitted to CYAA Race director as soon as possible after Race by either
hand or Email to peter.costolloe@gmail.com. Yachts not supplying a log will be disqualified.

A Passage Race log sheet has been provided for recording a log of the time of day when rounding marks. Logs will be accepted in other formats provided the time of time at each mark rounding is supplied.

If a Passage Race log is not supplied by a yacht that yacht will be disqualified.

This Passage Race Supplementary Sailing Instructions amendment will be posted at the RYCV and all skippers notified by email and at the Docklands Passage Race briefing session 8:30 am at Melbourne City Marina.

Guineas and the Inter Association Challenge.

Teams for each invitational are all set.
With a CYAA Pennant raising on the RYCV Signal Mast and a BBQ kick off
at Royals at 1:00pm this event will set the competitive stage of the 2013
Cup Regatta in motion.

Cup Regatta News Oct 30

cr_poster2013 Cup Regatta Documentation has been released

The skippers and crew have been sent the 2103 Classic Yacht Regatta Sailing Instructions. These can be viewed on our Web site. Bring our members into the Regatta picture the Melbourne City Marina berth allocations and a marina location map have been attached.

If you haven’t seen what the City of Melbourne people saying about the Regatta check this link out and look under the Classic Yacht Cup Regatta heading. www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/whatson.

Regatta cocktail function auction

First up before your attentions wanders.

Mark Chew has put together a pictorial montage of Port Phillip Classic Yachting images collected over 20 years. From “Waitangi” onwards. Yes, she’s in there. “Waitangi” was one of the original flagships of the CYAA. Mark has elaborately framed 3 of these 110cm x 80cm high quality montages and presented them to the Association. He has requested the CYAA auction these framed montages at our Regatta cocktail reception. Mark says this is his way to show his support of the Association in a manner that will also allow our members to actively show their support of the Association and its work to sustain Classic Yachting on Port Phillip.

Final

Our Principle Regatta sponsor, The City of Melbourne, will be represented at the Regatta cocktail reception by Cr. Kevin Louey. The City of Melbourne recognises the Classic Yacht Association to be an important part of the City’s strategy to sustain their connection to Melbourne’s rich maritime heritage with a modern day focus. Make yourself known to Councillor Kevin Louey.

David McKenzie has already put out a note to skippers that have entered the Regatta about how the ticketing and entry process will work. For those of us not sailing but wanting to enjoy the social fabric of the Association let David know your intent to come along. Name tags for those attending will be at the door for collection. We need to give the caterers, the close to attending numbers, to allow them to set up with no finger food shortage. Big night.

The function is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm.

Pre Regatta activity

It could be said the Regatta kicked off some time ago. So many of us started working out what to do and when to slip their boat and prepare them for the Regatta. This recent weather hasn’t held us. We have Roger Dundas still doing his Leonardo touch on Avian and George Low still sorting out the standing rigging on his recently magnificently rebuilt Tum Snow Goose. Take a look at her nesting in Rogers pen at Royals.

Andy Doolan reports “Tina of Melbourne”  will make the start after a serious make over as well. All this news is good news for our Regatta.

Melbourne City Marina Berth Allocations

Berth allocations have been made. They’ve been purposely made into a tight squeeze to fit us all into the one area for our Sunday activities. Particularly for the pod of Tum’s. The Marina management have opened up both sides a commercial arm to allow the fleet to tie up together on Sunday.

Skippers of yachts scheduled to tie up at the Melbourne city Marina will receive an email from the Marina Management team. This email will have the access codes for the Marina lounge facilities and also for after hours access through the Marina gate.

Here’s some notes about what’s been happening since the previous Regatta News Release.

Friday’s Regatta Invitational Racing.

The Guineas teams are decided, “Mercedes III” and “Pastime II” for the CYAA and “C97”, with Jeff Richardson and part of his crew flown in from West Australia and “Gemfish” with Phil Edwards. Our new Friday invitation, under the command of Dave Allen, the Inter Association Challenge, between the CYAA/CYANZ and CBA with 3 crew and 6 boats will see challenge racing as never before seen. Dingy allocation will take place on Friday with a couple of practice runs then it’s off to the races. 3 of them in fact, about 20 minutes each. David Leroy the PRO of Royals is all ready to put up a course to allow all of us to watch this Guineas and Inter Association action. Stirring stuff here.

Saturday Passage racing.

The Handicaps are done. The Kiwi crew allocation is done. The Kiwi contingent will have arrived via the “Melburnian” for some breakfast. Some short announcements before an approx. 0900 departure about pending commercial river traffic, then down the river where David LeRoy will be ready at 0955 to send us off on the passage race. A selection of six courses to choose from, supposedly for different wind strengths, but, who knows what he will set for us. Maps of the courses are also attached. To add to the tactical decision making process, a windward gate pass through to the first rounding mark will be set up for each passage race course.  No running starts anymore, it’s full on Classic Yacht Regatta racing.
Then it’s back to the Cactus for another Regatta kick on session at Docklands.

Sunday and Monday racing.

With a new set of handicaps supplied by David LeRoy it’s back to racing with a windward gate once again before heading out to the course proper. The current wind condition forecast for Sunday will provide some tight and tough Regatta racing. Still it’s only a forecast at this time.

Monday BBQ and Trophy Presentation at RYCV

Band and BBQ Catering has been firmed up. If you haven’t let David McKenzie know your BBQ numbers plan do it now as limited cash sales will be at the RYCV. The RYCV caterers need to know.

Our 2013 Regatta Poster

That vibrant Regatta poster telling the 2013 Classic Yacht Regatta story displayed at the top of the news release and on our Web site, was created for us by Celia Dymond, Celia crews with Jim Hutchinson on “Dingo” and is one of Melbourne’s foremost graphic artists. The image is the compass binnacle on Jim’s Tumlare “Dingo”. Compressing the A3 image to the displayed size doesn’t do it justice. Must have few for our Cocktail function.

Till the next Regatta News Release

2013/2014 Summer Series Race 2 and Regatta Comments

Another sad sight.

image006

Hobsons Bay Yacht Club Flagstaff Oct 20 10:30am 2013

The HBYC and CYAA Race Director’s watched and waited till what was deemed to be the last moment before postponing yesterday race. Phil Aitkins called to say leaving the Sandringham Marina it wasn’t possible for Trim. The Boambille team led by George Fischer and Michael Rhodes were ready to work the northerly up from the RMYS Marina but knew it was to be coffee and fight another day. Martin Ryan and Jenny McKenzie lived in hope the postponement was only till the afternoon but sad to relate the opportunity to race in Mercedes III favoured conditions was lost again.

The  Anchorage Marina people are all set for a new date for the Trophy race and after Race BBQ to happen on the next scheduled race of the 2013/2014 Summer Series November 17 . Maybe the conditions for next race and Anchorage BBQ will make up for the disappointment such as that expressed by Jim Hutchinson of Dingo, Phil Aitkins of Trim and the Ross Clark and Michael Williams team on BI. All were set  to pull up at the Anchorage Marina and enjoy the hospitality as was previously offered with the inaugural Trophy race last year.

So the 2013/2014 Summer Series Race 2 is now re-scheduled for November 17 to be conducted by the RYCV. Should be a great race as all entries will be in good racing trim from the Regatta workout.

Regatta entries continue to arrive. Remember there’s a cut off date of Oct 30 for both Marina berth allocation formalities and to finalise the catering for our Regatta kick off Cocktail function at “Berth”. That’s 10 days from now.

Courses for the 3 days of Regatta racing are almost completed. Course rounding marks will avoid the use of immovable shipping channel marks. They’ll be presented to your Regatta Exec. team for approval this Tuesday.

Some yard news. Andy Indrans is hard at it providing Corio Vertue with a new transom and new lodging knees in prep for her Bass Strait cruise this summer.  A mainstay entrant in the Festival of Sails Classic division. The 1960 built Laurent Giles design Corio Vertue has also taken out the Melbourne-Devonport race.

We also have a new listing on our Web site classified page. Leigh Norgates “Avalon”.  Take a look, she’s in great shape.

www.classic-yacht.asn.au/classifieds/

So remember to put the Regatta entry in. We have 12 Kiwi’s waiting to crew with us. Be prepared for a lot of attention to your Classic Yacht during her stay in the Melbourne city Marina at Docklands. The Association will be a highly visible part of the Docklands based Melbourne Cup festivities.

Here’s a link to some of the Regatta publicity the Association is already receiving .

Classic Race 2 Oct 20 Documentation

Welcome to the 2nd race of the Classic Yacht Association 2013/2014 Summer Series
and the Anchorage Marina of The Strand, Williamstown, 2013 Classic Yacht Challenge

anchorageRace 2 will conducted for the Association by the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club under the control of Tony Dawson, HBYC’s Vice-Commodore and Race Director, is scheduled to start at 10:30 am on Sunday Oct 20.

Attached are the Sailing Instructions and Entry list. The allocated handicaps are based on the shortened Race 1 performance’s. Forecast conditions for this coming Sunday indicate we will be close to the threshold of our maximum wind speed. Discussions on this subject with the Race Director have been started and a decision to go ahead, or not, with the race will be made early Sunday morning. Course H8 or H9 will be used if northerly conditions of approx. 20 knots is prevailing.

Our Race 2 Sponsor, Anchorage Marina, has issued an invite to all members of the Classic Yacht Association to enjoy their hospitality with a BBQ at the Anchorage Marina that will kick off around 1:00pm. After the race, Skippers are invited to tie up to the Anchorage Marina Wharf on the south side of theMarina. Use the dredged marina main channel, not through the moorings.

The first Classic Yacht on corrected time will receive an invite for a dinner for two, meal only, at the
Anchorage Marina Restaurant. Results will be announced at the BBQ. The Association commends your support of this sponsorship of our Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip.

A status on the 2013 Regatta preparations.

Co-ordination work with the Melbourne City Marina management is ongoing. Our Marina “mine host” Roger Dundas and your Regatta racing man are meeting up again with the Melbourne City Marina management to finalise the marina liasing arrangements. We have already filled up berths on one side of the Marina. Sailing Instructions are being finalised. Crews for our Friday afternoon Guineas Cup and the Elliott challenge between the Couta Boat Association, the CYAA and the CYANZ still being worked on.

Put your hand up for some Classic “young at heart” racing.

The Sunday Concours d’Elegance is being sponsored by Karen Batsons Restaurant “Cookie” with a $150.00 meal voucher. We also have UK Halsey and Safety Marine Australia sponsoring valuable
trophies. More next week.

That’s it for now, regards to all. Finger crossed that the BoM are wrong again.

2013/2014 Classic’s Summer Series Race 1 Oct 6

Welcome all to Race 1 of our 2013/2014 Summer Series of Classic Yacht racing.

Another great line up of entrants. We will again be able to watch that favorite of ours Lily Guy, the 1895 Corio Bay netboat, under the helm of Bil Johnstone take the fleet on again. Some regular starters will miss the first race. Travelling and the recent wild weather are the prime reasons. Trim the Ohlsen 35, from Sandringham, helmed by Phil Aitkins will be going us for a full series of racing for the first time.

Attached are the Race 1 Sailing Instructions and the Entrants with their allocated handicaps.

If your yacht is not on the entry list and you intend racing in the series use the attached entry form and let both David McKenzie and myself know pronto.

Small bit of yard news. Attached is what’s been keeping the handicapper busy for the last 10 days in the HBYC yard. In the background can be seen Rod Fullers H28 Shamrock receiving some attention to the cabin. We also heard our other Ohlsen, Corsair from HBYC was damaged during the wild wind on Tuesday. Renene’s still receiving the final touches of her deck makeover from Ferdy Darly while in the RYCV yard, Doug Hem has given a substantial face lift to Marie Louise III and Tandanya. Jim Wood tells us Windward II will be all set up ready for a Regatta appearance. Word has also been received that the Tumlare, Snowgoose, is now receiving the water soak treatment after a substantial rebuild in preparation to joining up with our fleet.

Regatta entries have been coming in. We have 12 Kiwi’s from the CYANZ coming over to race with us and the list of sponsors lining up to be part of our Regatta is growing. More Regatta news next week.

So for now it’s all go for Sunday 10:30 am for Race 1 of our 2013/2014 Summer Series.
