Classic Summer Series Race 8, Pursuit Start times and Instructions

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classics  2013 Summer Series,

Race 8, a pursuit race, to be conducted by the Race Director of Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, David LeRoy. starting from the Royals marina with Group 1 start set for a 10:30 am start.

The attachments have the group start times of all entrants and the associated Race 8 (Pursuit) sailing instructions.

A short reminder to skippers there will be no race committee radio recall if a starter is OCS.  A 10% on course elapsed time penalty will be employed in lieu.

The process used to allocate each entrant a Race 8 group start time, which in theory should have all starters arriving together at the finish, is based on a complex spread sheet formula. Handicaps based on Race 7 results plus the forecast on water conditions are part of this formula. All this is an objective challenge to the sharpened pencil of the Handicapper , who you all know and love.

With 7 races completed for the series, a worst score drop from one race will form part of the series aggregate points score.

One entrant that won’t make the Race 8 start is Scimitar. She’s again been on the receiving end of a combination of marina pen circumstances that resulted in mast damage. Identical story to what she received two years ago. Damian and Andrew Purcell, leaders the enthusiastic Scimitar team, are not happy about this unexpected challenge, but, they and their team will be back for our Winter Series.

While we have the sads with the Scimitar news, we also have the big news to look out for Tina of Melbourne taking the fleet on in Race 8. Tina, with skipper Andy Doolan, all being well on the crew availability issue, will be with us for Race 8 and our 2013 Winter Series. With Tina of Melbourne racing against Boambillee and Mercedes III, the three most important yachts from the era when Australian Offshore yachting people took on the world and won, our Classic fleet’s unique world class status is enhanced. The most successful yachts from all era’s of Australia’s Classic Yachting consistently racing together is a noted strength of the Association’s Melbourne fleet. This claim could soon be hollow. Frances is dangerously close to leaving Port Phillip.

Our friends at the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club are managing the Queenscliff Regatta Race entry process. Close of dates for race entry and off water functions very soon.

While not wanting to distract from the Race 8 count down , documentation for our 2014 Winter Series has been prepared. The Notice of Race and Entry will be sent out next week and installed on our web site.

We live in hope the Sundays weather stays on our side to allow a fair chance to all as the series points aggregate is very close.

Regards to all
