Instagram post 2189869710689050815_1962742127 This is “Integrity”.... being relaunched after a very professional paint job courtesy of @ferdidarley traditional shipwrights. She’s an interesting boat.... looks a bit Herreshoff like but is actually a 54 ft kiwi design that Jesse Martin owned following his 1999 circumnavigation.... he took her to Kavieng in New Ireland, PNG and she became the subject of his eponymous book “Kijana”. Her next chapter in life is to sail to Barcelona where she will hopefully become the Melbourne winter accommodation and adventure platform for the new owner. And in case you’re wondering... in the background is “Windward II” the stunning 1929 Dalimore designed Huon pine cutter, currently for sale @rycvroyals

Instagram post 2188928193795407835_1962742127 Not a Classic, I know..... but a great story of 10 women with little or no sailing experience from diverse backgrounds and ages, coming together and learning to race a Sydney 38 to compete (and perform well) in the 20th Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta and Hamilton Island Race Week..... All in less than a year! Go Girls!!! Follow them at @no_mans_land_racing @royalmelbourneyachtsquadron @thisgirlcanvic @awkr.rmys #sydney38. And what a great name for a boat thanks @burger.with.the.lot
Instagram post 2186885875961449517_1962742127 It will be amazing to see these four beauties on the start line in the 75th S2H starting in a month’s time.... In order of seniority... “Katwinchar” the  32ft 1904 ketch (I know she looks like a yawl, but apparently not) built at the Watney’s brewery in London....Next is “Windrose” the 1959 48ft Derekter built S&S.... she really is a yawl....then “Fidelis” 1964 Auckland built 61ft Reimers designed sloop which took line honours in 1966....and finally legendary three time 47ft handicap winner “Love and War” another S&S this time a sloop from 1973. RESPECT!  #woodenboat #classicyacht #sands #knutreimers #sparkmanandstephens #rolexsydneyhobart #sydneytohobart
Instagram post 2183362136011618438_1962742127 We all know there are 100’s of restoration opportunities out there but this one’s a bit more special! Yeulba (ex Culwulla) the iconic 1901 Logan built yacht sits in the Wooden Boatshop at Sorrento in need of a major restoration to ensure her survival. This is surely one of the best examples of this type of yacht and she has a truly remarkable history.
A 30’ lineal rater, predecessor and participant in the modern 8m rule, champion of four states, over one hundred years old, with her name on the most prestigious trophies, Yeulba is a yacht that is a a significant part of Australian yachting history. When her classic design is combined with a careful restoration she will become one of the most significant and impressive boats in Australia.
Her prize New Zealand Kauri planking and mysterious eye catching hull remain true to form and original. In scratching the surface of her past, a picture of Yeulba’s significance develops and it becomes clear that we are dealing with a national treasure. Saving the Yeulba means enabling a restoration true to her 1901 configuration and finish. The outcome will give her new owners a beautiful yacht of distinction, unique and practical, ready for shipping, competing locally and worldwide in any of the world’s prestigious classic yacht regattas. @woodenboatshop #yachtrestoration #woodenboat #classicyacht #sorrento #portphillipbay @rycvroyals @sscbc
Instagram post 2180178500613555333_1962742127 Now here’s a boat to fall in love with.... Derwent Hunter's blue water credentials are second to none, built as a fast fishing ketch by Walter Wilson, a second generation shipwright from the famous Wilson Brothers Shipwrights of Port Cygnet, south of Tasmania and was his last vessel. She was built of Blue Gum, Tasmanian Oak, Celery Top Pine and Huon Pine which grew within sight of the Wilsons slip yard, by the waters edge at Gardner Bay. These timbers are regarded as some of the best ship building timbers in the world, and were cut and dragged by bullock train to the slipway. She was the pride of the Hobart waterfront, re rigged for ocean going work by the CSIRO as a pole masted topsail schooner which served her better as a deep water working rig. Her design and construction have stood the test of time, in some of the harshest oceans on the planet, as many a tale has testified through her 12 years work as a Fishing Research Vessel, which was a small part of her ongoing career which stretched from subarctic waters to the tropics. Currently offered for sale by the Wooden Boat Shop in Sorrento www.woodenboatshop.com.au/for-sale/classic-wooden-boats/derwent-hunter @woodenboatshop #woodenboat #tasmanianhistory #derwenthunter #huonpine

Instagram post 2084470828006661430_1962742127 We’ve had a few old Melbourne boats on the posts recently so here’s 24ft Sydney boat from 1894. The Lady Loch is a forerunner of the 18 footers seen here on the harbour with at least five sails up. I don’t think they’re re 3Di #sydneyharbour #yachtracing #classicyacht #woodenboat #ladyloch #cyaa #1894 #sailhandling

Instagram post 2078991488792045892_1962742127 I hope I’m not boring you with these images.... but here are five examples from box five of the “Cigarette Box” collection. I’m loving the discovery .... the moment I hit command “I” (turning neg into pos) in photoshop is a (poor) equivalent of standing over the dev tray in the darkroom. When I think about the first image and then the upcoming Americas Cup in NZ, it occurs to me that sail handling as a skill might be going the same way as celestial navigation! #woodenboat #classicyacht #maritimehistory #portphillipbay #sailing #gaffrig #blackandwhite @royalgeelongyachtclub @royalmelbourneyachtsquadron @rycvroyals @hobsonsbayyachtclub @sandringhamyachtclub @royalbrightonyachtclub @doylesailsvic
