2020 Winter Series documentation

All scheduled CYAA 2020 Winter & Summer series races will be impacted by the Corona Virus guidelines. CYAA racing will start when all race conducting clubs used by the CYAA resume normal club racing schedules.

The CYAA (Vic) Winter Series Race 1 scheduled to be conducted by HBYC on April 26 has been postponed. Your CYAA Race Director is in close consultation with all clubs who conduct CYAA (Vic) racing. Future winter series race postponements are expected and will be made known to CYAA members asap.

March 18 Sydney based yacht club news received via Phillip Brown

Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC) racing is off for the rest of the season. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) and Middle Harbour (MHYC) have cancelled racing until further notice.

CYANZ ABD Group Classic Yacht Regatta March 7/8.

Congratulations to Cameron Doroughs intense helming of his David Philip designed Bungoona to bring her first across the pursuit race line. Throughout the race it was no let off. Spinakkers had to be flown in marginal conditions to keep the back markers behind them. For Bungoona, the John Guzzwell designed Manuka Rere and Evan Bieske’s Folkboat Seabird it was no looking back at the hard charging pack following them Unfortunately for the back markers the stronger wind at the finish gave these fleet leaders of Race 8 the consistent wind needed to hold off the heavy charging Ruthean. After an average of 95 minutes in course time, from fourth home Ruthean to the tail ender Avian only six minutes separated this group of fourteen finishers. Fleet pics from Jane Williamson from Mercedes III to follow. Best looking boat of the race had to be shared by Ferdi Darleys Ruthean, Scott McDonald’s and his crew on Pastime II (great pic includes Ruthean) and Michael Knights, Cole 40 Mistral IX and a special mention to Acrospire III . Both were a delight to watch. One drama seen during the race was the Acrospire III knockdown. A wind gust off the Web Dock rocks caught her after a tack was being completed. At least 45 degrees was the word from spectators on close by boats.

2019/2020 Summers Series Aggregate podium placings

Special congratulations to Bert Pullin, skipper of Astrud, for taking out the Summer Series Locker 57 trophy for the best on aggregate score. Consistent helming performance Bert and the work of his his top draw crew on his Griffen designed Astrud paid off. A popular and deserved win was the word from the fleet.

Our runner up aggregate result was a tight affair. Boambillee had a two point lead over Mercedes III. On the day conditions in a very tight finish allowed Mercedes III to finish with enough boats between her and Boambillee to allowed Mercedes III to top Boambillee by one point

Jan 22 2020 The first classic yacht race of 2020 is working up to be a blockbuster. The countdown for the Port Phillip Classic Fleet to race against Acrospire IV has started. Three divisions have been set up to give all boats a chance to watch one of an epic classic yacht races on Port Phillip unfold. Acrospire IV once again up against her nemesis Frances. Meanwhile the cracks of Port Phillip’s classic fleet are out to see how they rate against what was the trial boat for the original America’s Cup Gretel.

Jan 14 2020 Below are some pics received from Fair Winds after her arrival at Sydney’s Cammeray Wharf Jan 14 2020. Her Auckland, New Zealand ETA is Jan 31. Fair Winds skipper Mark Chew reports, a voyage to Sydney story from the pen of Sal Balharrie is in the works. 48 hours is the ETA. It will feature Fair Winds and her 3 days in Eden with fires all around a shell shocked community. Remember how the Eden wharf fleet protected stranded residents. So many stories of people standing up when it counted. Here’s one of them. All the pics below are linked to full size images. Dec 17 2019 CYAA Magazine Issue 41 Feburary 2018 Captain Voss and the Tillikum.

At the end of this magazine story about Captain Voss and the Tillikum global voyage story, there was a comment that John MacFarlane, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), the magazine article author, was about to publish in book form, the results of his detailed investigation into the life of Captain Voss and reveal many untold facts about the Tillikum voyage. That book, titled “AROUND THE WORLD IN A DUGOUT CANOE” is now available for ordering via the Booktopia web site.

Thanks to the authors, John MacFarlane FRGS and Lynne Salmon, your CYAA Magazine Editor received an advance copy of the Voss investigation publication. While the CYAA magazine article was brilliant, it was only a brief synopsis of the full Voss story. The author’s book provides us with previously hair raising unknown voyage details. Of particular interest is Australian connection to Voss, especially the various Australian yacht clubs that hosted and supported Voss in the many places he voyaged or traveled to. To sum up, the Voss story brings alive, one of the few surviving maritime stories from that era that allow us an insight into why the impact of these venturesome people is still as strong and recognised today as was this global voyage recognised yesterday.
Your magazine editor commends this book to all. For the sake of saving your soul, put this book into your guiding light life library.

9th December 2019 Here’s some more Race 5 details. Race 5 Results including the time of day finishing order of boats, actual on course time and corrected times using handicaps developed for calculating the group time allocations.. The order of boats home closely followed the corrected time order. While the light winds made the race a big boat day there will close across the line battles across the fleet thjat made up for the big boats escaping. The Summer Series aggregate and Marie Louise III Consistency aggregate status can be seen by clicking on the links.

Congratulations to Acrospire III for her first home line honours and her shortest on course elapsed time. Congratulations go to Kingurra for her storming home to almost recapture Acrospire III to be second boat home and to take out the best corrected time performance. Third home Boambillee did well to be close to Kingurra at the finish and to escape from Mercedes III by 22 seconds.

For the sail of the day go no further than Avian. Under the tight concentration by stand in skipper Monica Jones, the present RMYS Club Captain. Avain put on a remarkable display to hold off Acrospire III for two thirds of the race and the 3 larger boats for three quarters of the race. Frustration of the day goes to Manu Ka Rere Being the pathfinder of the fleet isn’t easy, For race 5 it was the missing RMYS Mark C that no one was aware of, not even the race director. A Mark of the same colour, a mystery mark, was seen nearby. This’ll do was the call, so all the fleet followed without a word. Post race news was Mark C was alive and well in the RMYS yard. The picture boat of the day went to Mistral IX, such a sleek looking classic.

Thanks to Jane williamson we have two Race 5 scenes to share. One of Acrospire III against the city sky line as she passes Mercedes III. The other shows Kingurra about to eat up Mercedes III. Don’t worry, neither Acrospire III or Kingurra got near the enormous Mercedes III Post race repast More of Jane,s pic’s will be in the yet to be prepared race 5 story. All up a brilliant to to finish off the 2019 race calendar. A great post race catch up by all at RYCV. Similar story of the post race catch up at RMYS where Mistral IX was the talk of the bar.

7th Dec 2019 Classic’s 2019/2020 Summer Series race 5 is all set to go. 9:55am Sunday is the warning signal at the RYCV Marina Race Committe box. Nov 24 Race 4 results A cleaner copy will be published later

All clear was the call from the Race committee vessel. Brilliant start by Cyan and Avian. but a startling start by Snow Goose and her all round sail saw her take out corrected time honors. Line honors went to Acrospire III. An amazing sight to watch Boambillee grab a pocket of clean air and go high soon after the start. Smart start line maneuvers & consistent racing tactics saw Astrud come home second to Snow Goose by 30 seconds. All up tight corrected times across the fleet made race 4 another day of great classic yacht racing.

Summer Series Race 3 Comments

One of the many Race 3 highlights was to be racing with Kent Bacon’s RENENE once again. Race 3 saw Renene come home to a solid 4th on corrected time placing. Not bad at all really when consideing her lay off from Classic racing. Another Race 3 sight from the Sandringham Yacht Club tower was watching Evan Bieke handle his Folkboat in the 20 knot conditions.

The Cup Regatta 2019 Status November 5

With the change to three divisions, the revamped Welcome Cocktail and the Monday BBQ social events and twelve CYANZ visitors the overall winner was “THE CUP REGATTA” and all the Classic yachts that supported the event. More details to follow with wrap up of On water and social activity events.

2019 Cup Regatta results Race 1 & Race 2

While wet and for some, very cold, Day one Cup Regatta lived up to expectations of a big Classic Yacht racing event with close corrected time results across all divisions. Fair Winds II took out Race one Division one corrected time while Acrospire III had big race to lead the Division one fleet home. The Tumlaren Snow Goose led the Division two fleet home to take out Corrected time while first timer Marama was the best division performer on corrected time and second on Line honours. Astrud led the Division one fleet Home.

Race twos saw Fair Winds II again take out corrected time for Division one while Mercedes III got the line honours gun. Dingo Lead the Tumlaren fleet home and took out corrected time honours .Our Division three saw Astrud again lead the fleet home with a close following Marama. Division three corrected time honours went to Tandanya followed by Bungoona. A magnificient sight as Tandanya crossed the finish line.

2019 Summer Series Race 2 postings 21st October 6:00pm: Full Race 2 results Series Aggregate after Race 2 Marie Louise III Consistency status after Race 2

Congratulations go to Kingurra for her taking out both Race 2 Line honours and first on corrected time. Watching her tack approaching R4 and her kite drop at the R2 rounding showed Ian MacFarlane had his 8 PoB working hard. Excellent path finding was the call from the fleet. Magnificent performance by Boambillee. Post race comments, all good, on Boambillee’s performance were heard from all at the race debrief at RYCV. Both Boambillee and Mercedes III did well to hold on to Kingurra on the kite run to R2.

The sail of the day has to go to Serifa. From her leading the fleet away at the start to snap wind filling kite hoist at Mark D and mixing it with the Tumlaren fleet throughout the race, Serifa was the standout Race 2 performer. Other race 2 performers was the Tumlaren fleet, The elapsed times between Ettrick, Avian and Dingo showed we can expect tight one design racing in the Cup Regatta Tumlaren division.

For all the fleet Race 2 was another day that saw great classic yacht racing op Port Phillip. Special mention goes to Evan Bieske and Seabird on their first classic race. Evan had his Folkboat Seabird going so well on the first leg. Evan’s post race report saw him already warming up for the next Classic race.

More race 2 details including a report from our CYAA Brisbane members and how the 177 year old team of Alan Payne designed Tasman Seabirds, Cherana (Dean Morse), Pagan (Peter Kerr) and Joanne Brodie (Dan DiBuraitte), cleaned up at the Wynum Manly YC St. Helena Cup will follow later. An early post Race 1 comment, Sept 30. After her 18 month layoff from classic yacht racing the Griffen 30, Astrud from the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, showed the Race 0ne classic fleet why she was the top Division yacht for 1979/1980 at Sydney’s, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club. After a tight beat to the top mark and then with a beautifully set and retrieved broad shouldered kite Astrud held her fleet position throughout the first race of the Classics 2019/2020 Summer Series to take out first placing on corrected time. Second placing went to that ever present Martini while Cyan had her crew find their sea legs in the fast lane. Of note was the leading the fleet out race start by Manu Ka Rere that gave her a fourth on corrected time placing.
A race feature was to see the return of Ettrick to classic yacht racing after a serious rebuild by shipwright Richard Blake. A notable first race shake down saw Ettrick close to how she previously race raced. Avian was in top form and ready to defend her last series championship.

Some notes about the 2019/2010 Summer Series entry process.

No need to send a filled out form if paying the full series entry fee by EFT. Insert the words Summer and your boat name, to a max of 18 characters, in the EFT Reciepients field. We’ll send a received confirmation message to the entrant. We need a copy of the completed entry form when paying by credit card or entering individual races.

Keep in mind, all entrants in the summer series must be financial CYAA boat owner members. In the spirit of all keeping all things equal, financial CYAA crew members are the go. Team CYAA!! yes. Go Classics!!

It’s a link to a New Zealand Mahurangi Classic regatta acquaintance of Mark’s who tells a sad story about the need to put their Classic on the market. Sunstone, on the market. Take a look. This story and link will be later moved to our Classic for sale web page.

Our Winter Series Race 6 is far from dead and gone.There’s now international interest in the Winner of our Winter Series Manu Ka ReRe, Built in 1953 and listed on the Laurent Giles register as Pumpkin. The first boat built to Manu Ka ReRe’s design had a remarkable circumnavigation voyaging history and is now deemed to be an object of importance to Canadian Maritime History. This yacht, the Trekka, is a static museum object exhibited in the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. A story informing of Manu Ka Rere’s performance in Race 6 was been sent over to the North West Pacific Maritime history web site Nauticapedia. Manu Ka ReRe’s performance in Race 6 will be included in the MMBC Trekka exhibit story. So while we’re racing our classic’s around Port Phillip we need to keep in mind this fleet of ours is a dynamic display of Australia’s Maritime History. The four stories describing Sunday’s August 18 Race 6 will be consolidated and sent out to our worldwide mailout data base of 250 email addresses. Still to analyse the elpased times of Race 6. It’s all about handicaps for Race one of our Summer Series. Best sort out the Summer Series Notice of Race and entry form pronto. First race Sept 29. 5 weeks away.

As far as Maritime Muiseum exhibit”s go Let’s not forget the the then soon to be King of Soain,Juan Carlos and his Tumlaren Neblina exhibit in the Portugal’s Maritime Museum or the Tim Phillips Couta Boat our Melbourne Museum. To keep all the Classic Yacht crews happy there’s a massive model of a the three tiered Galley at the Barcelona Maritime Museum.

For the 2019 winter Series Race 6 results and series aggregate click HERE These notes will be put into pdf form and sent to the general mailout list, 234 members. The results will be re calculated for a corrected time result for the Marie Louise III Consistency Aggregate status.

Congratulations to Cam Smith and Tim Metherall for their work to bring home Manu Ka Rere to her first CYAA Aggregate Trophy. Todays race was all about the small boats showing how well they can handle high wind conditions on Port Phillip. While all boats had dramas handling the 40 knot bullets the smaller boats were able to recover from round ups faster. First home congratulations go to Cameron Dorrough and his team on Bungoona. After an hour and 13 minutes of hard slogging she held of Michael Mactavish in Serifa by 2 minutes and 10 seconds after Serifa started 2 minutes behind her. Manu KaRere after a 14 minute start over Serifa came home a minute after Serifa while Martini came home a minute after Manu Ka Rere. all close pursuit race finishes in those heavy conditions. Next came Kingurra who started out 33 minutes after Bungoona and came home 17 minutes after Bungoona closed the line. Mercedes III follwed Kingurra home after retracing her course to pick up a mark.

Both Fair Winds II amd Marie Louise III were starters but conditions with one reef only demanded a rethink about continuing to race. Completeing those who challenged Port Phillip was Dave Baskett on Jedda. Dave said not today, after hoisting Jedda’s main. Down at St. Kilda Pre race calls from Avian, Dingo and Boambillee indicated they were all set to race but in high northerly winds the marina layout doesn’t allow safe sailouts. So for our RMYS based members it was a race through Binoculars in the RMYS Olympic Bar.

For all, the biggest challenge of the race was the Marina pen return. Manu KaRere reported on her multiple attempts to pick up their mooring. All boats took longer than usual to be packed up. Everyone done in. Post race, Ian McFarlane tied up Kingurra to the RYCV marina for a post race meet up with everyone else in the RYCV Bar. A great way to finish up the season. To listen to Cam Smith skipper of Manu KaRere, the smallest on water line boat in the fleet, rehashing the race with Ian Macfarlane of Kingurra, Peter Lloyd of Marie Louise III and Ross Smith of Martini and then Martin Ryan of Mercedes III showed Classic Racing at it’s best and strongest. Michael McTavish later on put ih his account of how well Serifa went and how she picked off Manu KaRere.

The race was summed up by the RYCV Race Director, all boats sailed well in the hard racing conditions. From David Leroy that means a lot. Definitley not small praise. So CYAA thanks go to RYCV for using the short interval weather break window that allowed the fleet get racing before the cloud based front from the north hit the fleet.

August 11. The much delayed CYAA Winter Series Race 6, re-scheduled for August 18, is a pursuit start race conducted by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. As the Winter series aggregate status is now a close run affair, the Race 6 group start times, based on the Frid am BoM forecast for Sunday’s conditions Hobsons Bay, will be issued on Friday morning, Aug 16. This web site page will be used to send out a notice if the publication of group start times is delayed till the Friday afternoon. Cold comfort news to all, HBYC to cancelled yesterday’s Brass Monkey’s winter series race. Now four out of eight race’s abandoned We’re at two out of seven.

CYAA 2019 Winter Series on Port Phillip Race 6 postponed to August 18.

Another jinxed day for the 14 classic’s intending to take on Race 6. Today (Aug 4) no wind and July 21 predicted gales. Our HBYC Race Committee waited till 11:00am. A wind zephyr came through that gave Zephyr a sail like she was in a gale. All 30 seconds of it . But the fleet weren’t moved. With no wind from the west or south in sight it was time to accept the second race 6 postponement call.

Hopefully third time lucky for our third attempt to complete Race 6 at RYCV on August 18. Will be fun time for the handicapper to work out those pursuit times for the last race of the Winter Series that has a very close series aggregate with a no worst race points score drop.

Tandanya continues her purple patch of 82 Consectutive years on the RYCV Register.

A story about the race 6 postponement is being worked on. The takeaway is we need a plan B to cover these situations. While we all are unhappy but understanding about the circumstances that led to the loss of a race, it’s still not acceptable, particularly after the expense and work we put in to keep our classic’s going.

CYAA Winter Series Race 6 has been postponed to 4th August Gale warning for today and Monday killed any hope of racing during the lighter wind conditions. Experience has shown high chance of strong wind bullets in the race area during the Sunday 10:00am to 13:00 drop off in wind strength.

Forecasts for Sundays wind conditions at the upper end of Port Phillip are being monitored by RMYS Race Director and CYAA Handicapper. A status SMS will be sent out this evening approx 6:00pm. RMYS conduct of race rules are: Gale warning forecast 4 fours before the scheduled start requires automatic postponement.

Results for Race 5 Locker 57 Series Aggregate status Marie Louise III Consistency aggregate status

Race 5 sees 16 seconds seperate the first four corrected times placings. Tumlarens feature big in the Race 5 results.

Congratulations go to the Tumlaren Zephyr for her first on corrected time by 3 seconds over the Tumlaren Dingo who in turn held off the Laurent Giles Manuka Rere by 4 seconds and who in turn held off the Phillip Rhodes Fair Winds by 4 seconds.

Line honours by a country mile go that clean skin Fair Winds. Dingo took out the Tumlaren one design honours.

A conspicous fifth on corrected time by one minute forty two seconds was the 1923 Alwyn. A Hobart A Classer designed by Alf Blore, Race 5 was Alwyn’s first time race with the Classic’s for many a year. She is still a strong PHF performer in HBYC long distance races.

Congratulations to Col anderson and his team for bringing Acrospire III home for her Race 4 win. No doubt about it Race 4 conditions gave her the opportunity to show how she thrilled the 1920’s racing scene.

Sail of the day goes to Laurent Giles Trekka class Manuka Rere under the helm of Cam Smith. Holding off the fleet in those light conditions was no accident. It was concentration on her beating in the light wind conditions and her shy kite reaching management hat allowed to fleet to watch the smallest waterline classic of the Race 4 fleet show, the forerunner of the JOG racing scene, a Honourable mention goes to Zephyr. Her brilliant after the second rounding mark R4 had her in contention for line honours. Anne Batson, Kath Solly and Pete Jerebek had Zephyr at perfect pitch. All up across the fleet every classic was a winner.

THE CUP REGATTA 2019

The latest 2019 Cup Regatta Intention to enter list has 27 Classic’s listed. The intent to enter list will be closed off after the end of June. The call for entries will begin after the Notice of Race is posted in August.
