Winter Series Commencement Day BBQ

Attached are the entries and their allocated handicaps for Race 1 of the 2014 Winter Series plus the associated Sailing Instructions. The race is scheduled for a 10:30 am start on Sunday May 4. The race will be conducted by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club with Bob Tanner as Race Director on the HBYC Race committee vessel ‘Privateer’.

A small note to, hopefully, avoid some on water confusion. HBYC will be conducting 2 handed race with a scheduled start time of 10:00am on Sunday morning in the same area as the Classic Yacht race start.

As mentioned in prior notes the fleet will see the welcome return to Classic Racing by Renene with Kent Bacon skippering and his hard working crew. Tandanya with her forever smart looking skipper Bob Munro will be back with us and Scimitar under the helm of Damian Purcell looking her best after a serious mast make over. Check her out as she powers through the fleet. Scimitar has already racked up a noteworthy performance this season with a tight second placing to Cameron Doroughs  Bungoona at last week’s Sandringham Centenary Regatta. Claire with her skipper Richard MacRae, also returns to the Fleet and is ready for the battle. The Classic Fleet’s netboat Swan has been tied up dockside, RYCV, in an all set to go and re-joins the fleet under the helm John Payne with his heavy hitting crew on hand.

One other of our fleet has been in heavy start line killing work up mode for the Series. Peter Lloyds Marie Louise III on top of her 3rd placing at Sandringham also worked hard, with Peter McDonald of Pastime II and your handicapper crewing, held off all but Tony Legg’s Soling Paji II in yesterdays RYCV mid week pursuit race fleet. For those members who want to meet up with other members mid week, Peter Lloyds Marie Louise III is the place to be with an after race dock side soiree` on John Raff’s Kate. John reports his netboat  Jean is receiving a race ready makeover. Both net boats, Jean and Swan, are restoration works of David Beazley, sadly deceased, from the Beazley’s of Port Melbourne fame.

Over the previous weeks word has been received from the Classic Fleet skippers and crew, ”We’re ready for the series”. One dark horse for Race I will be Cyan. Say no more. Ettrick to be helmed by her new owner Gordon Tait is all set and will be watched closely. Don’t worry, your handicapper will be also watching and noting everyone, relax.

Charlie Salters Tumlare` Ellida is still in serious make over mode under the hands of Ferdy Darly and his shipwrights. Not for long reports Charlie, who will be featuring as crewing strength for that great man Roger Dundas on Avian this Sunday. Doug Jenkin sadly reports to inform us that Bluejacket, the Knud Reimers Albatross, in spite of efforts won’t be ready.

The Race 1 start of our campaigned hardened 2014 Winter Series Classic Yacht fleet has become one of the must watch events on Port Phillip. That’s the word from the HBYC Race committee. They now have to limit their start boat people numbers.

Current forecast for Sunday indicates a breeze that will bring the fleet home in good time to take in our series commencement BBQ.
