2012 Classic Yacht Winter Series Race 6 (Aug 19) SI’s and entries (Posted 16.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classics 2012 Winter Series

Attached are the Sailing Instructions, Entries and their allocated handicap for Race 6, Aug 19.

Sundays race is designated as Race 6.

The previous Race 6 on Aug 5 was postponed.

Wind speed exceeding the Sailing Instruction 25 knot limit was being experienced at 7:30am, Aug 5 and forecast to remain at that strength at the northern end of the bay.

Race 6 (Aug 19) will be conducted by the Race Director of Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, Tony Dawson and assisted by Bob Tanner.

The race committee vessel “Privateer” will be on station, with an attendant rescue boat, in the vicinity the Port Melbourne Channel lateral No. 74.

Provisional race results will be published on our web site by Scott McDonald asap on receipt from HBYC.

An error was published regarding the date of the Classics last 2012 Series race, it’s scheduled for Sept 9, a pursuit with a BarB and series wind up get together after race.

The weather being forecast for Sunday looks favourable for us. Similar words were said before the Aug 5 race and look what happened.

I’ll save the latest Regatta organising activity stories for Monday, it’s all happening.

No Roger Dundas this race, he’s sailing from Noumea to Aust with Mark Chew on “Fairwinds II”

FYI our racing activity is closely followed by UK Classic Yacht people.

The Port Phillip waters we race on have been the locale for many historical, exotic and tragic events.

A report on one such exotic event is attached for some idle time reading.

So, it’s hit the line time at 10:30am on the dot next Sunday.

Classics 2012 Winter Series Race 6 (Postponed) Comments (Posted 6.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of our 2012 Winter Series

When two tugs are being set up to hold a car carrier car to the Webb Dock wharf in a Northerly you know that maybe, the right decision was made to postpone the Sunday race. Even the Royals committee boat ”Thorsen” was tied down in the hard stand pond in expectation of the big blow that didn’t really happen.

Irrespective of the disappointment, we harden up and live to race another day with our boats in one piece. Two more races to decide who takes out our Winter Series, Aug 19 and Sept 2. Then a break with Oct 7, the first race of our 2012/2013 Summer Series.

Note, as the August 5 race 6 was postponed by the conducting club, RYCV. Our next race, Aug 19, will be identified as race 6 and conducted by Hobsons Bay YC.

The 2012 Winter Series point score is still based on a one race, worst score drop. The 2012 Winter Series NOR Para 7.2 applies.

Moving On

The NOR and entry form for the Classics 2012/2013 Summer Series will be published after the Aug 19 Winter Series race.

The Classic Associations Race and Regatta schedule to the end of 2013 is now available for check out on our web site calendar. Courtesy of Scott McDonald.

“The Cup Regatta” organising continues.

Attached are our Cup Regatta publicity notices. The A3 poster and the double sided A4 tri-fold programme brochure for display at the keel boats around the bay. RGYC will put one on display tomorrow. A couple are in the Williamstown Info centre in Commonwealth Reserve. Put your hand up for a poster if aware of a worthwhile location available to tell the world about our Cup Regatta. The prints are better quality than the attachments.

The Regatta NOR has been developed, it’s with the Royals Race Director. The Regatta entry form will be available when the NOR is published. Generation of the Regatta SI’s and courses is taking place in co-ordination with the Royals Race Director.

Regatta handicaps? No problems. You’ll be looked after by that handicapper you all know and love.

Our Classic pennants, likewise are happening. Unlike the Flying Dutchman, they will arrive. The fortnightly status call tells us local football premierships also require flying regalia.

On the financial scene.

David McKenzie will soon be hitting on us for Subscription renewals.

Classics 2012 Winter Series Race 6 Aug 5 (Posted 3.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classic 2012 Winter Series

Attached are the Entries, Handicaps and Sailing Instructions for Race 6 on Aug 5 of our 2012 Winter Series.

The race will be conducted for the Association by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. Racing evolutions, under control of the RYCV Race Director, David LeRoy, are scheduled to begin with the warning gun at 10:25 am. The RYCV race committee vessel “Thorsen” will be on station in the vicinity of the POMC Lateral channel Mark 76.

Although our last race was shortened and half the starters were recorded as DNF, some handicap changes have been made. Overall, the relationship of the Classics assigned handicaps compared to those in the book I keep based the Yachting Victoria Handicap formula for local racing is close, overall fleet average of 1%.

Some other news, 1st 2012 Regatta organising activity and 2nd a member subscription offer from the Classic Boat magazine people.

The 2012 Regatta publicity poster and program have been printed. They will be displayed on the Royals lawn deck notice board after the results of Race 6 are announced. A reduced file size digital copy of these documents will be sent out the Victoria members with the Race 6 post race comments. The Regatta poster will be sent to keel boat yacht clubs around the bay for notice board display.

Next up is the Classic Boat Magazine subscription offer.

The Association was approached by Chelsea Publishing, the relatively new publishers of Classic Boat Magazine, with a membership based printed subscription offer. This offer is part of Chelsea’s campaign to develop their Australian subscription base. The Association Exec. took this subscription offer up as a bonus to CYAA membership.

The Association will not be an offer intermediary. All communication and fee payments will be directly between those interested in taking the offer up and Classic Boat Magazine subscription managers.

The first round of the offer is going out to the Victoria membership only. Our national members will be notified shortly by email. For non email members the offer will be posted out with the membership subscription renewal notice.

The printed subscription offer is $74.00 for 12 issues. The lowest priced offer ever offered by the publishers, anywhere. The publishers claim this offer will remain at that level, come renewal time.

The digital subscription to Classic Boat is $46.00 for 12 issues. Close to the publishers current introductory offer, it remain at that fee for CYAA members.

I’ve taken out both print and digital subscriptions to see how the process worked. Both offers send sign up confirming emails. No problems with the print offer take up. I’m happy with digital magazine display on both desktop and android tablet.

I’ve attached the promotion offer story from the publishers. The CB cover images attached to promotion letter tell the story.

Those images tend to give the impression the Classic Boat Magazine is for the big end of town Classic Boating scene and UK orientated. From my experience that’s not the case. Articles in every issue have comments that reflect direct connections to our racing fleet. Recently there were big articles on the CYANZ Regatta and Rawhiti restoration. As I stated in the attached letter, the Classic Yacht construction photos and comments found inside many Classic Boat articles were invaluable to me during the rebuild of “Alwyn”

For the Association, the offer provides editorial access to medium that can publicize our Classic Fleet racing activity specific to the Classic Yacht racing world on a global scale. This access into Classic Boat is in addition to the Sail World web based general racing newsletter we occasionally use.

To reflect the Chelsea Publishing’s commitment to this offer, two digital subscriptions have been offered as spot prizes for our 2012 November Regatta.

Here’s the web site address for membership print offer take up

The digital subscription option on this link will redirect you to the Zinia magazine web hosting site for sign up.

Next job!!

3 more sleeps to hit the line on Sunday at 10:30 on the dot.

Forecast, at this time of the week, appears favorable.

CYAA 2012 Winter Series Race 5 July 22 Entries, Handicaps and SI’s (Posted 19.7.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the 2012 Classics Winter Series.

School holidays are gone so back to our winter racing.

Attached are the Entries, Handicaps and Sailing Instructions for Race 5 of our 2012 Winter Series.

Race 5 will be conducted by Hobson’s Bay YC with Race Director Tony Dawson and Bob Tanner on board the HBYC Race Committee Vessel “Privateer”

Some minor ACH changes for Race 5 will be noted. For the first time, in possibly a year, optimum wind and sea conditions in Race 4 allowed most starting yachts the opportunity to race to their capabilities. From these Race 4 results, apart from the first 3 placegetters, the ACH of other yachts has been modified slightly. Comparison between the book kept on each yacht’s performance based on the Yachting Victoria formula and the actual Race 5 allocated handicaps show an average 0.01%, 1 point in every hundred, variation. Not much, but still important numbers when it comes to corrected time calculations.

The YV based formula performance book is kept on all yachts in our fleet for use in our Cup Regatta and Geelong races. I can hear the screams, (of rage or delight?) already.

These Race 5 ACH numbers were run through the Race 4 elapsed times. On paper the fleet corrected times were far closer, 2.5 minutes between the first 8. Placing swapped between the two yachts at the top, middle and bottom of the Race 4 results.

So tight racing, in ideal conditions, will happen across our fleet. Skippers and crews are on notice.

Two additional entries have appeared on the start sheet. First up there’s Avian, after a big mast rebuild project by Roger Dundas. Second, Alwyn’s back, she makes a return to the Classic racing scene after her 3 year lay off for a structural re-strengthening. This race will be Alwyn’s warm up for the Cup Regatta. For Race 5, she’s been put up against Bob Munro’s Tandanya for a shoot out.

Results for Race 5 will be provided by email to the Association and Royals admin office after the race by HBYC. The provisional’s will also be on our web site, asap, courtesy Scott McDonald. Full results, with back calculated handicaps and series points status, will be published on the Associations Web site and the HBYC web site the following Monday, all being well.

No doubt the CYAA header change on the two attachments will be noticed. This small change is part of the ramp up for our Cup Regatta Nov 2 to 5.

By now the Associations flag ship, the CYAA bi-annual magazine, will have been received by our financial members. Comments, all positive, have been received regards the magazine quality articles and presentation and requests to pass on congratulations to Roger Dundas for his work. We all know the amount of serious work Roger has given the Association to present our magazine.

Thanks go to Clarissa Flockart, crew on Kingurra, for the two page article in the Royal Brighton Yacht Club magazine “Short Tacks”. The article gave RBYC members an insight to our Associations racing action. Clarissa has been crew for Ian Macfarlane for many years, her dad also sailed on her with Peter Jourbert, Kingurra’s designer, during her early racing years.

Scott McDonald has installed the article on our website. Go to this address to download the pdf of the article.

In a class of their own

So back to the water to hit the line on Sunday at 10:30 on the dot.

CYAA 2012 Winter Series Race 5 Starters, Handicaps and Sailing Instruction for Race 5 June 24 and local Assoc news (Posted 21.6.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the classic 2012 winter series,

Attached are the entry and handicaps plus the sailing instructions for Race 4 of the 2012 Winter Series.

Sunday’s race will be conducted for the Association by Royals with David LeRoy, race director.

The weather being forecast for Sunday doesn’t look good. We will be in touch with David LeRoy early Sunday for his decision on conducting the race. I’ll send a note to the skippers if his decision is to postpone the race to another day.

There’s been a big three week maintenance effort put into Martini by Ross Clark and his crew. As we know there always seems to be more backward steps than forwards steps with boat maintenance. Ross took several rather large backward steps. Not a problem for Ross. Martini looks a picture and is all set for Sunday. One item still to be completed, the memo to the handicapper. Maybe I can write one for him. Something about a request for a lower handicap as my workshop and push bikes are no longer on board with me and I’ll now have to cope with this lost in space feeling, that should do the job.

Our 2012 Melbourne Cup Regatta preparation activities are under way.

We’ve had pre-commitments from several skippers already. Serious moves are happening to bring our world class 8 metre fleet into the Regatta. Tim Phillips is bringing Storm Bay up. Helen Lovett is returning to defend Oneone’s 2011 Regatta overall takeout. Mark Bergin’s doing great things to bring about a significant Couta boat fleet presence. So far 12 Kiwi’s from the NZ Classic Yacht Association have committed. We have people coming from other states to sail with us.

The H28 Association has accepted the invitation to sail with us in the Regatta to help the Classics Association celebrate the 70th year of the H28.

By Regatta time the Tumlaren fleet should be strengthened by at least one more vessel.

Our Regatta cocktail reception venue at Royals for Friday Nov 2 has been booked. Pip Todd will be managing the function for us.

The race programme is not finalised. At this time there will be the Guineas race on the Friday plus some PR and press coverage activity for us arranged by Mark Bergin. There will be the usual two races on Sunday with the pursuit on Monday. The debate is about the Saturday race format. One or two. We are leaning towards two around the usual RMYS marks. This gives us some leeway to still have a Saturday race if the morning weather is a problem. Your Regatta committee is looking at ways to bring all the members home clubs into the Regatta programme.

By the time the Regatta comes around our 2012/2013 Summer Series will be running

Roger Dundas has completed the assembly of the articles for the latest issue of our Association’s flagship magazine. He has passed his hard work on to Mark Chew’s Blue Boat sales promotion company for formatting, then it’s off to the printers.

An order for 50 sewn Classic Yacht Association pennants has been submitted to local flag maker Ivor Evans. Same as those previously made for us by Ivor Evans, 22” long 11 “ on the hoist. They will run at about a bit over $50.00. We can easily order more if there’s a run on them. We ordered 4 x 7’6” pennants as well for flying on the Royals and HBYC signal mast when we race and for clubs when conducting races for us.

For those in the know the Vic State Gov’t Dept of Consumer affairs has some new Incorporated Associations legislation to take effect July 1. David McKenzie, our association administrator, has processes in hand to comply with these recent changes. The Consumer Affairs website has all the Incorporated Association legislation changes listed.

July 1 is also the start date for the new Vic Gov’t Dept. of Transport, Marine Safety regulations. What’s happening can be chased up on the DOT Marine Safety web site.

Another round of Association subscription renewal will be issued soon a bit earlier than previously to minimize the administration and membership burden required by the 3 sets of fees, Subs, regatta and summer series. Our race entry fees may have to increase, Royals have given us notice of their cost increases.

That’s all for now.

Hope we have some decent sailing conditions on Sunday

Regards to all

Classic 2012 winter Series Results Race 2 and series points status (Posted 22.5.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classic 2012 Winter Series

Attached are yesterdays race, Race 2, results plus the aggregated points score for the 2012 Winter Series.

Although yesterdays weather conditions were not ideal for racing, the good news was we had a racing fleet made up of 23 on water starters.

The highlight of the race was the light wind performance exhibition of the Tums by Doug Jenkin on the helm of Ettrick. Our fleet leaders received a light wind sailing lesson.. Ellida with Charlie Salter on her helm also sent a Tum message to the fleet. Good to see Boambillee return to the podium.

Throughout the fleet each yacht, except for one, reported on times during the race when they started to gain on nearby yachts and then falling off due to conditions. The one starter who couldn’t complain was the 1923 A classer, Acrospire III. who blitzed the field on elapsed time.

Commiserations to those on the yachts that had the race finish time gate shut on them, particularly to our good friends on Martini, who had it slammed in their faces.

There’s a Sail World article about the race, plus some photos, at this address.

Now for the handicap readjustment.

Scott McDonald has provided his photo take on yesterdays fleet at this address

Some general news.

The exec committee has appointed a working group to look after the 2012 Cup Regatta.

Your President and Handicapper have taken on the role of farming out the considerable number of tasks needed to be sorted out prior to and during the Regatta.

A list of the Regatta orientated tasks will be soon generated, we’ll be asking for support.

We have our usual list of suspects who have always stepped up to support the Regatta.

The more logistical support from our members the stronger the Regatta.

So to our next race on June 3

Classic 2012 Winter Series Race 2 May 20 Sailing Instructions and Entries with Handicaps (Posted 17.5.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classics 2012 Winter Series.

Attached are the Sailing Instructions and the list of Entries and their Allocated Handicaps for Race 2 on May 20.

The race will be conducted for the Association by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria with David LeRoy, RYCV Race Director.

Racing evolutions begin at 10:30am.

Adjustments to allocated handicaps of several yachts have occurred. The changes were made to start a process where all starters will have a fair chance to take out the corrected time result.

The Classics “local” ACH calculation process, that averages yachts last 5 BCH results, is close to the procedure used by Yachting Victoria. The BCH calculation process indicates trends in the racing performance of each yacht and their skippers and crews generally over a range of sailing conditions. Because our fleet covers a wide range of performance capabilities, a small amount of discretion outside the YV formula has to be used.

Generating yacht handicaps is an inexact science. We all work hard to maintain our Classics in racing trim. No one enjoys racing, knowing how hard they work on their boat, the assigned handicap is not a fair reflection of their boats capability. The fleet handicapper, who you all know and love, will endeavour to sustain this fairy tale.

The Association will now acknowledge the Skipper and crew of the yacht that takes out the corrected time result of each race in this and future series with a suitable 750 ml liquid trophy.

A story of our Race 1, with some images, was published on the Sail World news web site and published in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Here’s the link to see what was sent out.

http://www.sail-world.com/Australia/Classic-Yachts-2012-Winter-Series—Cyan-takes-the-silver/96978

So it’s all ready to happen, next Sunday morning at 10:30 am

Regards and hard sailing to all.
