2014 Cup Regatta Sailing Instruction amendment

2014 Cup Regatta

Sailing Instruction Allocated Courses

Notice of Amendment No 1

ammdt

As the current Forecast by the BoM for Port Phillip indicates strong winds in excess of 20 knots  a new course has been drawn up to use the protected waters of Hobsons Bay that are behind the Gellibrand Breakwater where 18 knots of wind can be expected. An amendment to the Allocated Course Sailing Instructions that describes this additional course, course 10, is attached to this mail.

An on water evaluation of the state of these waters and their suitability for Classic Yacht Racing will take place at 8:30 am on Saturday. Cup Regatta Skippers will be informed by SMS or email or by phone of the decision to race or not. At this time the 2014 Cup Regatta racing commences at 10:00am. If heavy sea conditions are prevailing then a decision will be made for the afternoon racing.

Our much looked forward to Guineas and Inter Association challenge was short lived. The on water conditions blew up during the racing. With gear damage happening the decision was made to shut down the racing after one race.

Race 1 entries and assigned handicaps

Attached are the entries and assigned handicaps for the Classic first race of the 2014 Cup Regatta.

2014 Cup Regatta welcome function.

First note is space is still available for additional takers to our Regatta welcome function at Docklands. EMail David McKenzie pronto to get yourself and crew in. david@jandmck.com  A great and one of the few civilized yachting functions to bring your family to.

Sailing Instructions

Copies of the General and allocated course sailing instructions plus the allocated course descriptions are available on our web site at.

www.classic-yacht.asn.au/calendar/the-cup-regatta/

Handicap adjustments during the Regatta.

As per Yacht Victoria Regatta handicap rules after each race is completed a new handicap for each finisher will be generated. These new handicaps should appear on the RYCV Results page prior to the race start. This page currently displays the Race 1 allocated handicaps. This will be the web page for the Cup Regatta results and aggregate points status. All races count towards the overall aggregate points.

www.topyacht.net.au/results/rycv/2014/club/CYAACupRegatta/series.htm

Cup Regatta Course and 2nd race start infomation

The course descriptions have a beat from the start line to a weather gate. Location of this gate and its distance from start will depend on the prevailing sea conditions. The gate can be rounded on either the port or starboard hand.

The predicted weather indicates some decent racing weather. We have courses suitable for wind strength up from 5 knots to 30 knot gusts from any direction that will allow for two races on the Saturday and Sunday.

The start time for the second race will depend on the last finishing time and how the RYCV race committee stand with the concurrent Regatta they are conducting for the Victorian Sports Boat Association. The second race start time will be communicated to the Cup Regatta fleet time by VHF 73.

Nightmare material

Over the Regatta we will be viewing the return of Frances to classic yacht racing. Her skipper Peter Johns would like the fleet to be aware this will be a first time event for himself and his crew. While all are competent racing sailors this will be a first for the fleet to be racing with her. We need to keep in mind how fast and powerful Frances is. Her bow has pierced steel. Peter Johns has beefed Frances up and refined her sheer to look more beautiful but decidedly more deadly. So when it comes to duelling with her on the water keep on mind you are taking on a yacht that has notches on her gun belt from those earlier racing years and has defeated one of the current top performing 8 metre yachts in Europe, Saskia.

Tumlare’s at the Cup Regatta promotion event

Besides Regatta racing we have intentions to conduct one other notable Regatta event, that is a choreographed Tumlaren start between races on Sunday. This will involve 6 and possible more Tumlarens. How this event will be managed let alone made to happen successfully is still being discussed. As we know good ideas seldom work so let’s see if we can break this rule. The intent of this effort is to obtain material for a global campaign to promote our world renowned Tumlaren fleet and our Classic Yacht fleet on a global basis.

Cup Regatta Invitationals

The Guineas Battle continues

So let our Regatta begin with our invitational racing for both the Guineas Cup and our Inter Association Challenge. This is where we see Mercedes III and Boambillee move the bar room and car park battle to the water with the Couta Boats C97 and Gemfish to determine whose the cock. Classic’s or Coutas? This is a unique Classic Yacht event where shameful scenes never to be seen anywhere else, world wide, take place.

Inter Association challenge

With the start of the Guineas come the warning signal for the Elliots. All organised by Dave Allen with some Hot shot and heavy teams from New Zealand and Australian Classic’s, from the Couta Boat Association and an ex gun Hobart Dragon team flying in from Hobart with minutes only to spare will face off in the 6 boat 3 race challenge. Which team will reign supreme as the Iron Chef would scream.

Cup Regatta Welcome function

All the day’s invitational events will be discussed and rehashed over a few and a few more welcoming cocktails at our Regatta launch function to be conducted for us at Docklands. There are some ticket still for this function. EMail David McKenzie pronto to get yourself and crew in. david@jandmck.com

A great and one of the few civilized yachting functions to bring your family to.

The Cup Regatta Reception is one of the venues where the high quality Mark Chew framed Cup Regatta poster of our fleet will be auctioned off.

Melbourne City Marina Berth allocations

Marina Pen allocations are all done and attached.

It’s a worthwhile squeeze to keep the fleet in one location. There some power boat stuck on the T end berth. E08 The Marina marina management have been unable to move it. Frances has been moved from this berth to be close to Sayonara so her length won’t be a hazard to other yachts berthing. Caraid has also been put on an inside berth to minimise the attraction of her stern to other yachts.

Mondays Pursuit Race

Note: The courses descriptions for the Monday Pursuit race are included in the updated pursuit race sail instructions, now on our Web site Regatta page. The original pursuit race SI’s had no course descriptions. 2014 Cup Regatta Pursuit Race Sailing Instructions Oct 30

Cup Regatta BBQ

All the post regatta action will be supported by our regular live music support act. The Long and Short of it. Again they’ll be producing some tunes that will make our Cup Regatta a memorable event. Particularly for our kindred spirit CYANZ visitors. Booking again David at david@jandmck.com

Reminder for the Docklands reception

Don’t forget those BBQ booking and the opportunity to again take in the tunes for one and all by the Long and Short of it. Again David McKenzie’s the go to person to sort out the tickets.

Back to The Main Event

So on to the big event. Race 1 with 26 entrants. As previous promotion has said. We’ll be both participants and spectators watching the re-emergence of Frances, one of Australia’s significant yachts, as a pure racing machine.

26 Classic Yachts, many listed on Australia’s historic vessel register all doing what they were designed to, racing hard and going for the line.

This is it. Welcome to the Cup Regatta.

Cheers and hard racing to all

For a better take of the PR sent to Sail world I’ve attached the pdf of the story. This pdf will go to the local keel boat yacht clubs. Pass it on to other groups as well. If members what a High Resolution copy of the poster in A3 size lets know.

2014 Cup Regatta Update

image002Cup Regatta Entries

This year the Cup Regatta will be the venue for a unique Classic Yacht racing event, the return of Sayonara Cup racing on Port Phillip. Don’t miss out on being part of this where Sayonara, Acrospire III and Frances return us to those days of the Golden era of Australia’s yacht racing on Port Phillip.

Still time for entries.

So get to it.

Here’s the To Do list for all our Classic skippers

Pens will be available from Friday or earlier by arrangement with the Marina. Some boats are arriving on Thursday.

All yachts are encouraged to FLAG UP: CYAA flag, buntings, Australian flag, NZ flag, corporate flag…Let’s show Docklands that we are having a Regatta

Inter Association Challenge:

Social Functions.

As previously noted let David McKenzie or the handicapper know your intentions to be on the scene of the social functions. We need your input to confirm catering plans.

The Cup Regatta documentation will also be sent to the handicappers mail out list.

Cup Regatta courses

The courses have been prepared to allow all entrants to complete two races each day and for after race socialising at Docklands. As much windward work as possible has been squeezed in. The course locations stay at the top of the bay and are set up to keep the entire fleet in view during the race. All first race starts are scheduled for 10:00am and will involve a windward beat to a gate. The gate will be sailed through in the same direction as when starting. Either mark of the gate can be rounded to run down to the course proper. The colour of the gate marks is TBA. All finishes will be at the RYCV Marina. If sea conditions prevent morning racing then the first race will start at 1:30pm.

Interstate and International Visitors.

Caraid will be raced by Bobby Barrs family who are travelling up from Hobart. One of our Elliots will be crewed by the Caraid team. As former Dragon title holders they are working with Joe Tuck and the boys to represent the Couta Boat Association.

Classic 2014 Summer Series Race 2 commiserations

Classics 2014 Summer Series Race 2 Postponed to November 16unnamed

Sundays Race  2 was postponed to November 16. The BoM predicted 30 knot wind strength for Port Phillip as issued on Sunday at 5:10am exceeded the Sailing Instruction 25 knot upper limit.  Much disappointment all round. The return to racing at RMYS was going to be a big occasion for Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip. The next scheduled opportunity for the Classics to race at RMYS is Feb 2 2015.

Going back to the decision not to race. Cold comfort, but later on Sunday morning, the RMYS Race Officer expressed the opinion their big boat racing would have been called off due to the dangerous sea conditions that developed mid-morning at RMYS. The Association and the RMYS Race officer had been in contact since the previous Friday in the hope that the 30 knot prediction would be dropped back to 25 knots. RMYS had a course selected and their effective on water rescue team all set to go.

We know many Classic Yachts on our fleet revel on 25+ knot conditions, in fact some of our Classic yachts demand it.  But as previously said, when the BoM put the predicted wind strength for Sunday up to 30 knots, any ideas of starting the race were killed. Points about the skipper being responsible for decision to race, CYAA/RMYS and their duty of care based decision making tolerances, opinions that our Classic Yachts are up to the task and so, all go out the window. Compliance to the SI’s is mandatory for the Association.

Suggestions to change the postponement of race or abandonment of race upper limit of wind strength to Gale conditions (30 knots) to be in line with Sailing Instructions for Cat 6 Club racing cannot be taken on. Classic Yacht racing is conducted under Safety Category 7 rules. As well the 25 knot limit gives all skippers an even chance on the decision to race or not. Going up to 30 knots would bring an element of unfair racing to the Classics. Right now fair racing is a feature of Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip.

2014 Cup Regatta

Next scheduled Classic Yacht racing is our Cup Regatta starting Oct 31. Sponsors for trophies have been lined up.

A team of 8 CYANZ members are on their way to take over Fair Winds and also race on our members Classic Yachts. All the race documents and race officials are prepared. Docklands berthing allocation plans are ready. Entries from Classic Yacht skippers are being received every day. From interstate we have visitors from WA to sail with Jeff Richardson on the Couta Boat C97 and a large team from Hobart on their way to race Bobby Barrs Caraid.

The Regatta begins with the Invitational Guineas Cup and the Inter Association Challenge. Dave Allen of Sayonara, is organizing the three teams to compete for the Inter Association Challenge using the RYCV Elliot 5.3 metre sail training craft. This is where the debate as to who is the “Cock of the Associations” is settled. Not in the car park but on the water. Tight racing is a feature of both events with a series of 3 races to a weather mark and back. With 3 races for two events conducted within an hour start boat activity is a sight to see.

The Cup Regatta racing format has already been described. 2 sets of races on the Saturday and  Sunday with the pursuit start on Monday. Maybe this will help make up for the loss for the loss of our Summer Series Race 2.

Classic Yacht racing at its best will be the feature of the 2014 Cup Regatta. The scene of the our combined fleet of Classic Yachts and Couta Boats all racing hard, stirring stuff. With Peter Johns racing the 8 metre Frances for the first time and a fleet that ranges from Couta Boats such as Jeff Richardsons top performing C97 and Loama to consistently top racing Classic Yachts such as Bungoona, Martini and Cyan  including other 8 metres such as Caraid and Marie Louise III through to the likes of Windward II, Sayonara and Acrospire III plus a New Zealand team on Fair Winds. That start line will be electric. In the mix will be Phil Atkins Trim who took out the 2013 Cup Regatta best overall and that consistent dark horse of Bob Munro, Tandanya. Say no more. This is the place to be. So those skippers still to submit a Cup Regatta entry, time is running out. Get to it.

The Cup Regatta social functions are:

Friday 31st – Midday: Lunch BBQ at RYCV for Guineas and Inter Association Challenge participants. Others welcome to BYO.

Friday 31st6.30pm to 8.30pm Cocktail Party at the Waterfront Black Sail Bar next to Melbourne City Marina. Cocktail food and open bar. Booking required.

Saturday 1st4.00pm onwards: Drinks on boats at Docklands marina. Pizza with Squealers and Growlers from Cargo Restaurant. Best value beer in Melbourne.

Sunday 2nd4.00pm onwards: Drinks on boats at Docklands marina. Informal dinner for Kiwis.

Monday 3rd1.00pm onwards BBQ at RYCV with Presentation of Cup Regatta trophies. Booking required.

2014 Cup Regatta Sailing Instructions and course maps will be issued later in the week.

Cheers and commiserations to all

The current forecast for Sunday indicates good racing conditions with some reasonable strength northerlies.

2014 Cup Regatta

Entries are constantly being received.

The Cup Regatta documentation has been prepared. A selection of 9 Courses has been set up for 2 races on the Saturday and Sunday. This documentation will soon appear on our Web site.

News of the Cup Regatta featuring  Classic Yachts of Sayonara Cup fame racing against the top ocean racers of the 70’s and a team from CYANZ competing has drawn requests for more news from other Classic Yacht Associations. What these people are told is that this is all true and we have a fleet of Classic Yachts and Couta Boats from all the major yacht clubs competing. Another aspect of the Cup Regatta that has drawn international attention is the Friday invitational events, the Guineas Cup and Inter Association Challenge.

So, let’s hope the conditions for Sunday are in favour when the CYAA Pennat drops at 10:30 from the RMYS St. Kilda tower.

Cheers to all

CYAA 2014/2015 Summer Series Race 1 Results

Attached are the results and aggregate status of the Classic 2014/2015 Summer Series after Race 1.

The many features of the first race of the 2014/2015 Summer Series Classic Yacht Racing were discussed at length while enjoying the BBQ work of Karen Batson. Karen, in the same manner as her foredeck work on Zephyr, with her team of elves from Mercedes III, put on a BBQ production that has set the standard for future Series commencement BBQ’s. Thank you Karen

Some of the first series race events discussed were the return of Cyan with her skipper Craig Brown and his hard working crew and Kent Bacon’s effort, after winning his global race against time and the hour long sail from Sandringham to put Renene and her crew on the start line.

With the CYAA pennant being dropped the HBYC race director described the race one start as a spectacle. Sure George had to restart Boambillee but there were many on the button starts. Loama showed she was definitely no fishing boat with her start. Martini was another whose on the button start was noted. The run down to St. Kilda breakwater saw Boambillee tear up the fleet with her speciality, a shy kite run, to pick up the fleet leaders of Mercedes III and Pastime II. Sayonara with tops’l working hard also moved through the fleet in her ever winning 1898 style, while Cyan and Marie Louise III paced each other to the St. Kilda turning mark.

On the beat out to the R3 mark Sayonara showed the fleet her speed by laying off and sailing a 1/3rd more distance and still keep her place in the mark rounding order. The attack on the R3 mark by the Tumlare’s of Ettrick, Zephyr and Avian were in indicator of a probable finish line duel.  Tandanya and Loama were observed to be holding their fleet placings. Claire was also looking as a chance for the decent result till that the wave slop stopped her on the last tack approaching  R3. A bit more wind strength was the order here. Richard MacRae on the helm of Claire reports he’s not greedy, only a little bit more was the request.

The run from R3 to R4 showed the fleet order changing. Both Mercedes III and Boambillee were able to stretch their lead over Pastime II while Sayonara was always chasing this group with good effect. The Tumlare fleet with well set kites crept ahead of Marie Louise III and the spinnaker flying, fast charging Cyan. Our Winter Series winner Bungoona had to suffer and pay dearly with a non spinnaker run due to mast head issues caused by recent strong winds.

The beat to the finish witnessed close tacking duels between the Tumlaren Fleet with Ettrick taking the Tum line honours by 1.4 minutes. Anne Batson, using match racing tactics, held Zephyr on her starboard tack to maintain cover on Avian after Avian’s close port tack crossing.  Charlie Salter on the helm of Avian had to concede, Anne Batson bought Zephyr home by 0.07 seconds over Avian. Marie Louise III was in the middle of all this duelling determined to keep her cover on Cyan.  The word here is for the regular skippers of Avian and Ettrick to take note of what the mice get up to when the cat’s are away.

Close on water battles to the finish line were also seen with Bungoona holding off Loama by 0.23 of a second.

The performance improvement of Bluejacket was noted. Doug Jenkin and his persistence to bring Bluejacket back to her previous racing is paying off.

Congratulations go to George Fisscher and Michael Rhodes and the competent support team on Boambillee for their corrected time win by 0.183 seconds over Martin Ryan with his well oiled team on Mercedes III. The results of the race indicate they are ready to take on the leading Couta Boats of the Couta Boat Association in the soon to be held Cup Regatta Guineas invitational race.

With our fleet of 16 starters the first race of the series showed the Classics racing has followed on from our successful 2014 Winter Series.

Presentation of the 2014 Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy to the Skipper of Bungoona Cameron Dorrough and his crew was another after race event.unnamed

Bungoona Skipper Cameron Dorrough with his Race 1 Summer Series crew of Frankie, Andrew Padgett and Bill Spicer with the Marie Louise III 2014 Consistency Trophy “CLASSIC REFLECTIONS” Missing but mentioned in dispatches are Kingsley Watkins, Allan Hollamby and Ray Milne

In addition to taking out the 2014 Winter Series “RUSTY SHACKLE TROPHY” and the “FAIR WINDS TROPHY” best overall for 2014 Bungoona also took out the Sandringham Yacht Club Classic Division of the 2014 Centenary Trophy.

Next Classics Summer Series race will conducted by RMYS on October 19. Location of start line. RMYS Tower on St. Kilda Breakwater. RMYS courses will be used. Details of these courses are available from the RMYS Sailing Instruction booklet version 5. Available on line at www.rmys.com.au/rmys-sailing-instructions.html

The SI’s will be issued on the Thursday prior. They will contain a description of the courses and a map of the RMYS marks.

Marks comments on observing the fleet in action for Race 1

CYAA 2014/2015 Summer Series Race 1 Documenmtation

2014/2015 Summer Series Race 1

Attached are the details for the first race of the 2014/2015 Summers Series, Sunday October 5 10:30am. Another event this Sunday is the start of Daylight saving. Clocks go forward that one hour.

The race will be conducted for us by the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. The current weather forecast for Sunday indicates Mark Chew will have conditions to grab some decent action images of the 20 Classic Yachts entered for the series. Note that HBYC will also be starting their 2 handed race series at 11:00am in the same area. Depending on the course set for the Classics race our fleet may be racing close to the pre start area of this race.

One feature of our 2014/2015 Summer Series will be new courses for the fleet. We will have RMYS courses for Races 2 and 6 and when the Classic Summer Series fleet races with the Cruising and Classic divisions of the Lipton Cup Regatta for Race 3.

Thanks to all the Skippers and Crews of the entries for this Summer Series. 20 entries. Thursday was full on for David McKenzie and Anne Batson when several entries had to be processed and passed to the handicapper. Looking over the entry list we see all those consistent entries that bring national credibility to our Classic Yacht racing on Port Phillip. There’s  the welcome return of Craig Brown and his top gun crew who’ll be pushing Cyan hard again. Richard MacRae’s  Claire and Bob Munro’s Tandanya also notified the handicapper of their intentions to take the fleet on.

As previously mentioned with a wider selection of courses now available, we should have some good and hard racing throughout the series. If we manage to have 8 races, all the better.

Let’s see if the handicapper can maintain those tight corrected times, a feature of the recent CYAA Winter Series.

Our CYAA sponsored Summer Series commencement BBQ will be at RYCV after first race. Karen Batson of Zephyr and Cookie Restaurant and Beer Hall fame is our Maite’ d with all her famous fixings and gastronomic surprise’s with Donati’s of Lygon Street sausages.  Re helpers, … open to some cooking assistance but Karen’s sure she can rope in the apprentices on the day. The BBQ professionals from Mercedes III crew have put their hands up.

2014 Cup Regatta  activity.

Cup Regatta entries are being received. A revised copy of the Cup Regatta entry has been attached. The Friday Cocktail function at the Docklands and the Monday RYCV Regatta BBQ function dates were out by a day.

The Cup Regatta racing will be made up of 5 races, 2 x Saturday, 2 x Sunday and 1 pursuit Monday.

Although we don’t know what the conditions will be for the first Cup Regatta race on the Saturday and Sunday, but with a 10:00am start, a course off a decent length and challenges for all entrants can be selected. The second race on Saturday and Sunday will provide the chance to make amends for the mistakes of the first race. A course will be selected that to allow time for the after race social at Docklands. With the possibility of 5 races for the Cup Regatta the Regatta based handicaps should be able to bring about some tight racing by race 4. .

One pleasant task for the Cup Regatta is the allocation of Docklands Marina pens for the Regatta. Berthing our Classic Yacht Regatta fleet in the centre of Melbourne’s maritime district is the opportunity to promote the heritage of Melbourne’s Classic Yacht Racing.

CYAA Magazine

By now financial members would have received Issue 35 of the magazine. If not, there’s one way to fix it. Contact David McKenzie.

Your magazine team is setting up to prepare the next magazine content.  If you have a story or article that you feel the Classic Yachting people from around the country should know about. The CYAA magazine is the vehicle for the task. Already next issue content is being provided to the magazine team.

Classic Yacht boat yard news.

After a significant program of work including the installation of an electric motor by Ferdy Darly’s people, Frances should hit the water Thursday Oct 2. Rib repairs and sheer line rework were some of the task completed this time out. Some warm up crew work is now the order before Frances restarts her racing career. During his shopping tour to provide Frances with an upgrade of running rig fittings, Peter Johns used the services of “Toplicht”. Peter recommends this organisation to all Classic Yacht owners as a source for their fitout requirements. The web based catalog can be viewed at toplicht.de and mailed to you at no charge of wanted. There’s many paper catalog items not listed on the web based catalog.

Two Frances items of note was that in 2004 she was awarded the CYAA Waitangi Trophy. This trophy is awarded for the most significant contribution to Victorian yacht history through the restoration or preservation of a vessel.  In our summer series racing of 1997 and 1998, 18 years ago, Frances was either first or second in every race.

Phil Atkins has Trim slipped at SYC for fast repair to a mast spreader. The damaged happened while racing on a shy kite reach. Obviously the mast was saved by dramatic and prompt action by Phil. Unfortunately this means Trim will be a no show for the first race

Over at HBYC, evidence of Pastime II’s recent Channel mark incident have been removed by Peter McDonald and Andy Indrans been hard at work with Mike Hurrell to refasten Corio Vertue’s ribs and rebuild her interior.

Jim Woods has reached the final stage of preparing Windward II for the Cup Regatta. Mast varnishing is the word here.

Lindsay Holland has his Tumlaren  Zea out at of the water at RYCV and looking good. Lindsay is looking for some crew to help Zea race again with the Classics. Here’s the opportunity to have some Classic yacht racing action in a well known and noted Tumlaren, Zea. Members willing to help Lindsay race Zea with our fleet, contact the handicapper.

That’s it till 10:30am Sunday when we hit the line for the start of our 2014/2015 Summer Series and present the better side of our Classic Yachts to Mark Chew.

Incidentally, Mark Chew as owner of Cotton Blossom took out the first race of the 1998/1998 summer Series and was awarded the Fair Winds trophy for the best racing results over the 1997 calendar year. For 2014 Cameron Dorrough with Bungoona took out the Fair Winds trophy.

Cheers to all
