CYAA (Vic) 2014 Winter Series Race 4 July 20

2014 Winter Series Race 4 postponed to August 3

After all the gale strength winds experienced across Port Phillip over the previous week surely there would be some left over for the weekend. So went the thinking of the 18 cracks from Melbourne’s Classic fleet yesterday. Not to be. 10:25 am and up went the Answering Pennant (AP) with a diesel train engine strength sound signal from the Hobsons Bay YC Race committee vessel.

From Sandringham YC we had Kent Bacons with his laced latte sipping Renene crew and Phil Atkins with Trim advising the handicapper.

After the hard, drift

One must eat

Kingurra from Royal Brighton showed with sails ready to set. From Royal Melbourne came a dot that transformed into a pair of Tumlare`s.  Jim Hutchinson’s Dingo providing an effective demonstration of how the highly torqued British Seagull outboard engine is equal to any task by the speedy towing of George Lows Snow Goose from St. Kilda to the start area.

Shamrock, the highly credentialed H28 from Hobsons Bay YC, with Rod Fuller on the helm waited patiently, in fact to 3:15pm when he was last seen disappearing into the afternoon fog that came up to also gave Renene 100 metres of visibility. Corio Vertue with andy Indrans also wasn’t going to let the day.

From the RYCV the Tumlare’s  Zephyr, Ettrick and Avian received assistance to the start line area against a ripping ebb tide from Marie Louise III, Claire and Bungoona respectively.

John Payne and his team put Swan on the line race ready to take on Clive Mouldays team on Blackadder.

In the meanwhile a never ending line crew of kept appearing on Bob Munro’s Tandanya to also have her ready.

After a leisurely hoist of sails and a check on Dingo’s towing progress Sayonara drifted around the start area. Helmsman Dave Allan took a stress break to provide collision strategy advice to Roger Dundas on Avian.

Far to much talking. This should be serious

Michael Mactavish, after blessing Serifa’s engine, went out to do a light wind battle with the fleet full of his Dutch Barge handling skills.

Mark Chews Fair Winds II under the relaxed helm of John Donati kept a watching brief on the proceedings in preparation for the run home.

So at 11:00am with the two sound signals and the hoisting of the N over A visual signal, the fleet of 18 cracks accepted the decision to abandon racing for the day. Race 4 is now postponed to August 3. No worst score drop for the Series aggregate score is now in effect.

We all had a great day.

Just shows that if on the water ,can always be great.

CYAA 2014 Winter Series Race 4 July 20

2014 Winter Series Race 4 July 20

Term 2 School holidays are over and it’s back to Classic yacht racing.

Attached are the entries, allocated handicaps and sailing instructions for Race 4 of the Classics 2014 Winter Series. The race, scheduled to start at 10:30am, will be conducted for us by the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club.

Sailing Instruction amendment

Note: The Sailing instructions have been amended to change the RRS Rule 44 penalty exoneration procedure. The two turn penalty exoneration requirement has been amended to a one turn penalty exoneration requirement.  This amendment brings our Classic Yacht Sailing Instructions in line with our Cup Regatta Sailing Instructions.  Watching Gordon Tait in Ettrick do the right thing last race was painful. Our Classics are definitely not light displacement vessels. The New Zealand Classic Yacht Association now uses this RRS Rule 44 amendment.

On water Photographer this Sunday

Indications are that the photographer used by the ORCV to record their winter series will be on the water to record images of our fleet in racing action. The HBYC people, who do all the ORCV press boat work, offered him the option to be with them on their race committee boat and rescue boat.

Membership Renewal.

Our Administrator, Anne Batson, will be sending membership renewal forms for the 2014/2015 year.

We all know how important our Association membership renewal is for our Classic Yachts. Q.E.D.

The main event, Sunday 10:30am

With the far more benign weather conditions forecast for Sunday we can look forward to another day of great Classic Yacht racing

Regards to all

Norman S Wright Shipyard 105th year celebration.

image001

Last weekend, July 12, the Norman S Wright shipyard in Brisbane celebrated their 105th year of family operation at the RQYC Canipa facility.  Norman S Wright , designed and built the Stradbroke II Motor Yacht in 1926. With the Stradbroke II ships bell being used as a Cup Regatta trophy, the CYAA membership, through Greg Doolan, our member from Queensland and your CYAA (Vic) handicapper, produced an 8 page booklet that details the colourful history of the Stradbroke II. The booklet was presented to Bill Wright, operator of the Norman S Wright shipyard, to add to their extensive shipyard archives. Each of the 90  Brisbane’s Classic Boats owners that celebrated this event were also presented with the Stradbroke II story. Copies of this story will be presented those CYAA Victoria members who have contributed to the Stradbroke II story, the RYCV archive and the State Library of NSW (a CYAA Member) for document archival purposes.

Through the efforts of Col Anderson, the Stradbroke II ships bell, now hangs on the RYCV dining room Classics wall.

Here’s the link to the event story and booklet pdf on Greg Doolans Traditional Boats Queensland (TBQ) website.

Entrants to our Summer series who don’t enter the Regatta will be included in this Regatta race as a Classic Summer Series entrant.

The RYCV Lipton Cup Regatta Notice of Race details will be provided when available.

Tumlare’s

Below is an image of how a fleet of Tumlare’s raced at the Queen City Yacht Club Toronto Canada in 1946. Unfortunately the racing rules of today now prevent the crew racing style of yesterday being used by our Tumlare fleet. Some of the Tumlare’s shown are still active.

Roger Dundas, Avian, has revised the Australian Tumlare register for submission to the global Tumlare’ data base. It reads as a who’s who of racing on Port Phillip from the 1930’s.

Classic Wooden Dinghies

Our Member, Antoni Perri,  who races with Mark Chew on Fair Winds II was the cover story of the recent South Gippsland Yacht Club magazine. The SGYC conducts a Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta every Australia Day weekend. A notable event in the Classic Yachting world. The SGYC mid Year magazine has been attached. Good stories on how the local wooden dinghy designs evolved.
