CYAA 2014 Winter Series Race 3 Entries, Handicaps and Sailing Instructions

image001Attached are the entries and handicaps plus the Sailing Instructions for Race 3 of the Classic’s 2014 Winter Series to be conducted for the CYAA by Ian Robertson, Race Director of the Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club.

One SI item to note is the change in H8 and H9 course descriptions. The requirement to round Channel Mark 79, up near Station Pier has been deleted. HBYC requested this change. It also helps keep our mast heads away those fixed mast eating structures.

To help those ever resourceful crews assist their skipper finding the way around marks of the allocated course, Roger Dundas, Avian, has organised the laminated production of an enhancement to the Col Bandy produced map of the top of the bay marks. This map shows all the fixed channel and recreational marks plus the laid course marks of the RMYS and RBYC. On the reverse, the H series courses with their associated numeral pennant are described. A small donation is being requested to assist defraying their production cost. Roger’s the contact for obtaining a copy of the laminated chart and course description on Sunday or any other day. rogermdundas@gmail.com

The after race BBQ this Sunday at RYCV will be byo or the RYCV kitchen menu.

To date there’s been no status received on the Sydney to Melbourne voyage of the Steam Yacht ENA.

We have two additional entrants to our 2014 Winter Series fleet. First up is the welcome return of Rod Fuller’s H28 Shamrock to again race with us. After a recent maintenance makeover she’s race ready.

Shamrock

Shamrock

Our second new entrant for Race 3 and a first time for Classic yacht racing on Port Phillip, we’ll see Doug Jenkin on the helm of Bluejacket.

Sorry for no image of her but there’s an expectation she’ll be carving her way through the Classic fleet on Sunday. In similar fashion when, known as Fairlie III, she took out the St. Kilda Yacht Club, (now RMYS) 1950 Queenscliff to Devonport race. Lindsay Chalmers, her previous owner, who put much restoration work into her, described Bluejacket as a yacht that sails beautifully but races better.

Designed by Knudd Reimers, of Tumlare` fame, as a fast cruiser to weather North Sea storms, Bluejacket is a sister ship to Coe that won the first Trans Atlantic race for the division that Adlard Coles raced in. Built by Jack Guitterez at Brighton, Melbourne in 1946, she’s done the ownership trail of Adelaide, Port Lincoln and Portland. She has cruised Bass Strait and King Island under the names of Corinthian, Fairlie III, Trommie II, Josephine and finally in 1969 as Bluejacket, on her return to the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, under the ownership of Les Nangle.

Sunday’s Race 3  will be a big day for Classic Yachting on Port Phillip. For the members of the RMYS to see their well known and respected yacht, Bluejacket, when helmed by Les Nangle and on Sunday under the helm of their well known and respected member, Doug Jenkin, it will be another page in their clubs history. Bluejacket will be racing against these other RMYS yachts in our 2014 Winter Series Classic Fleet. Boambillee and the two Tumlare`s Dingo and Snow Goose. Other members of our Classic Fleet from RMYS are Windward II, Tina of Melbourne, Akela and the modern Virtue, Sunbeam.

One of the 2014 Winter Series fleet who won’t be with us is Serifa. Her skipper Michael McTavish will be doing a 7 day voyage from Maillag on the west coast of Scotland in the 73 ft Pilot Cutter Eda Fransden . Michael says he’ll send a few photos if the mists clear and keep a log for a magazine story.

Being a big fan of these 45/50’ long English Pilot Cutters that were sailed by a man and a boy with the Pilot sitting in side, Michael tells the story of spending 3 days sailing the Amelia Rose around the Isle of Wight a few years ago with the two owners and himself handling the boat. The highlight of this voyage was the fun of short tacking, to bring the boat up into Poole Harbour in about 15 knots with hundreds of boats racing and cruising around. Some took fright and motored out of our way with sails flapping!! Aussie’s on tour was reported to be the kindest of many words said by faces ashen !!

Advice has been received from our Sydney member, Nigel Stokes owner of Fidelis, that Fidelis is celebrating the 50th year since she was launched.

She has raced and cruised close to 250,000 miles with line honours or places in most of the major races in and around the Australian East Coast and across the Tasman.

Tasman The book Semper Fidelis with the history of the yacht will be launched at the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club on Tuesday June 3rd.

So with light winds the expectation for Sunday, it’s time to come alive again and hit the line at 10:30 on the dot with all down on the lee side and no moving.

CYAA Vic 2014 Winter Series Race 2 Results and comments

image001Attached are the results of today’s race along with the Series Aggregate and the Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy status.

With breeze dropping 17 knots and flat water, watching a fleet of 18 Classic’s all going at it to hit that line on the gun is one of the perks of being the race starter was the comments from the Race starter, David LeRoy.

Kingurra stormed through to lead the fleet from the start with Scimitar not holding back on her second race with the fleet after a long break from racing. Bungoona and Blackadder with one their better starts of the season, were right in the mix. Serifa also came through to grab clean air.

Some tense port/starboard moments along with some spinnaker retrieval and wind shift issues during the race tell us it’s not all sweetness and light out there when racing our Classics.

After a hard crew workout the Kingurra took the gun for line honours after holding off Scimitar with her full main flying who took out the day on corrected time. No doubt it was the helming skill by Roger Dundas that after a constant battle to best Cyan, Trim and Marie Louise III that bought Avian  home 12 seconds on corrected time behind Scimitar under the helm of Damian Purcell. Of course her 3rd crew person setting up Avian’s sail trim and downwind rolling under spinnaker, as noticed by the handicapper, had nothing to do with her placing.

Cameron Dorrough’s Bungoona’s 3rd on corrected by 30 seconds over Cyan under the helm of Craig Brown was the payoff for that on the button start and keeping her after start wind clean. Tight racing was the word where any on course mistakes or drama’s had a dramatic effect on result with a 1’48” separating the  5th and 12th corrected time placing.

With our Tum fleet, apart from Avian again tight corrected time results were the story between Zephyr with kite retrieval issues, Dingo with her close call and without Jim Hutchinson’s top crew Cylia Dymond, who’s doing well in the Women on Water series, and Ettrick with Gordon Tait on the helm and smartly trimmed by Heidi holding on the Marie Louise III on the first run, were some of the race is not over till it’s over moments.

At one part of the race the handicapper had given the race to Blackadder for holding on to the fleet after her on the line start and then to Serifa who also held the fleet till wind shifts snookered them.

The on water battle between those two top ocean racers, Mercedes III and Boambillee continues. Although recently listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels, Boambillee didn’t get the nod from the starter, Mercedes III was given the split second corrected time tie breaking decision by the starter’s race results.

The fleet was bought home by Martini who constantly improved after the start by showing the fleet how to handle difficult sea conditions and Claire with persistent helming by Richard MacRae and constant triming and hard working by that gun forward hand Greg Hyne to bring her home, was not missed but the eye of the handicapper. Both Snow Goose, after recovering from a pre start issue picked up the fleet till and Corio Vertue is in good shape after some on water, while racing,  issues caused her to notify the race committee of her retirement.

So all up another great day of racing for the Classic fleet.

With 18 starters coming out in race in what was forecast to be stronger wind conditions it shows our fleet skippers and crews, from consistent racing, know their Classic Yachts can handled the upper limits of the sea conditions we race in.

So with another Classic BBQ by our Tumlare’ team of quartermasters from Donati’s of Lygon Street and Karen Batson’s  Cookie Thai Restaurant Beer Hall and  their ever willing galley hands lead by Roger Dundas and Anne Batson completed , the results  of the day racing were given were announced.

Unfortunately all this good news was followed by the sad moment of the day was announced. This was the news that Cyan will no longer be racing with us. Due to her impending sale she is now dock bound. Members are saddened to see that great looking and well crewed S&S 40, no matter what the conditions up went the spinnaker, leave us after her 7 years of racing with the Classic fleet.

Watching her great acceleration on her first outing are still embedded in the memories of the Peter Lloyd and his crew of her consistent  adversary, Marie Louise III.  A sincere round of applause was given to Craig Brown to show the CYAA appreciation of Cyan’s contribution to the credibility and colour of the Classic fleet.

A sad loss to the fleet but with every cloud there’s always a silver lining. Doug Jenkin has now entered Bluejacket into the Winter Series and Rod Fuller’s H28 Shamrock will also be rejoining our racing fleet.

So until next race on June 1 to be conducted for us by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club when we come alive again.

Incidentally the RYCV now have a Classic Yacht Logo on their website home page. Clicking on this logo will bring up the results of yesterday’s race and the series status points. A CYAA logo has been supplied to the RYCV to resolve the presentation problem of the current logo.

CYAA Queensland Activity

Below is an photo of Savona skippered by our Ex Treasurer Stuart Stubbs  celebrating his 10 years of CYAA membership. Stuarts membership is now based  in Queensland and staunch supporter and promoter of the CYAA. It’s a message to our Vic membership that our Queensland membership is active and wanting to sustain the local Q’ld membership and supports national aspect of the CYAA.

Savona and the Q’ld Classic Yacht Association fleet are all set for the Queensland Cruising 39th Yacht Club Vintage Yacht Regatta on June 7th to 9th, as promoted in our recent CYAA Magazine.

CYAA 2014 Winter Series Race 2 Entries and Sailing Instructions

Attached is the list of entries with their allocated handicaps plus the Sailing Instructions for Race 2 of the Classic’s 2014 Winter Series.

The race will be conducted for the Association by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria under the control of Race Director David LeRoy.

Not much in the way of handicap changes. The first 3 placing from Race 1 received some handicap reassessment attention along with the last placing.

Analysis of the previous performance of each entrant, based on the average of the last 5 back calculated handicaps and the overall average of the changed handicap calculations, shows the allocated handicap for each entrant for Race 2 is close to or within these two average calculations.

As much as the handicapper would like to perform surgery on some handicaps, consistency must rule.

Our after race BBQ with those Donati’s of Lygon Street premium meats will be held at the RYCV with a $10 pp serving. Roger Dundas and Anne Batson will be at the tongs with those excellent Cookie Restaurant fried onions supplied by Karen Batson. Salads and chips will be available from the RYCV kitchen menu.

So back to racing this Sunday, 10:30am. We live in hope for sea conditions that allow more of our Classic Yacht fleet make it to the start line that were able to for Race 1.

Below is an image from 1959 of a Tumlare’ T4 Cygnet racing on Georgian Bay, Vancouver.  The image was received through the efforts of Roger Dundas, Avian and Charley Salter, Ellida, to re-establish connections with North American Tumlare’ fleet owners and skippers. The principle Tumlare’ yacht club in Canada was the Queen City Yacht Club of Toronto. This yacht club is currently celebrating their 125th year of existence.  Till 1964 there was a biennial Tumlare’ regatta between the Queen City Yacht Club and the Columbian Yacht Club of Chicago for the Babson Cup.

CYAA (Vic) 2014 Winter Series Race 1 Results and Aggregate status

image001May 4, 2014

Attached are the results of the CYAA (Vic) 2014 Winter Series Race 1 plus the Series Aggregate status and the Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy status.

With 20 knots of wind strength from the West and big leftover seas for the previous evening gale , the Classic Fleet of 11 vessels went for the line in a reaching start to the 2014 Winter Series.  After closely watched pre start evolutions on both sides of start line, Mercedes III showed the fleet which way to go with a well timed start.

Mercedes III on the run to mark R4 after her on the button start Race 1 May 4 2014

Mercedes III on the run to mark R4 after her on the button start Race 1 May 4 2014

On the run down to the RMYS D Mark Mercedes III under a #3 head sail was losing ground to a group headed up by Serifa fighting off, Avian, Snow Goose, Martini, Zephyr and Bungoona. At that part of the race it was between Serifa and Bungoona to take out 1st on corrected time, both racing well above their handicap.

But after the RMYS D mark rounding that pegging back of Mercedes III didn’t last. Mercedes III showed her class by stepping up the tempo and making the Port of Melbourne 79 mark in one tack. Not to be out done, Fair Winds II recovered from her hard fought reach to beat past the fleet on the return leg to Port of Melbourne Mark 79. Analysing the overall elapsed time of Scimitar, on her welcome return to Classic Yacht racing, with her handling of the big slop on her long after start beat, indicated the handicapper needs to pay closer attention to her. Same applies to Corio Vertue. Her overall result reflects her additional on course elapsed time but definitely not her performance capability. The HBYC crash boat had trouble keeping up with her at one stage.

Corio Vertue with the Port Phillip bit between her teeth Race 1 May 4 2014

Corio Vertue with the Port Phillip bit between her teeth Race 1 May 4 2014

Looking over the corrected time results indicates tight racing for the first 7 placings was the word. Except for some extra on course elapsed time, Zephyr would have been in this mix along with Fair Winds II who had to battle some difficult reaching conditions. Scimitar, with that brilliant mast of hers, was unlucky not to be mix and the same goes to Corio Vertue. A well deserved 1st on corrected time and line honours goes to Martin Ryan’s Mercedes III and his hard at work crew.

One of today’s fleet not mentioned so far is the Tumlare` Ettrick.  We leave the best to last. While watching the handling performance of all the Tumlare`s in the heavy sea conditions which showed why they were selected as the design best for Port Phillip, you would think the sail of the day would be awarded to the Tum Fleet. Rightly so. But the standout performer of the Tum Fleet was Ettrick. A lot of work was happening in her. With every roll and push from the heavy seas, her headsail trim was worked constantly and her Gybe performance at the RMYS D Mark was spot on. The main over and the headsail tight, ready for the beat The sail of the day must go to Gordon Tait and his crew on Ettrick with their well placed and deserved third placing. Through her many years racing of with the Classics, Ettrick has shown her class with the 2001/2002 Summer Series win when helmed by Richard Downey and her 2013/2014 Summer Series win when helmed by Doug Jenkin. Unfortunately for Ettrick, the handicapper, who was riding the HBYC Crash boat, saw all this.

All up, although the race was shortened, it was a well enjoyed race by all the skippers and crews. The sad part of the day was knowing local conditions prevented Trim and Renene making the sail up from Sandringham to race. The same thoughts go to Richard MacRae and Greg Hyne who bought Claire out to race but made the correct and brave decision to race another day. The fleet missed their company. As well the Race 1 Fleet also missed the company of those other Race 1 entrants who couldn’t make the start.

A special thanks to George Low who bought the Tumlare` Snow Goose out of the RMYS Harbour in local heavy conditions to race with the Classic Fleet. After the race she presented a lonely sight. All alone in the heavy slop making her way back home.

The after race commencement day BBQ went off with great fun. Under the control of Roger Dundas and Anne Batson, the turning tongs were given a good work out. Besides the Donati sausages and burgers the Classic fleet skippers and crew were given a treat with the presentation by Karen Batson of the best tasting ever fried onions prepared for us by her staff at the Cookie Thai Restaurant and Beer Hall.

To finish the day off, the recently inscribed Locker 57 Summer Series trophy noting Ettrick took out the recent series was presented to Doug Jenkin. The Trophy resides in the RYCV Trophy Cabinet.

Next race, May 18, will be conducted for the Association by the RYCV. Doug Jenkin reports that all being well with the preparation schedule we should be in for a treat.  Bluejacket will receive a christening from her previous owners wife, Jan Chalmers, and will be declared ready to take the fleet on. A big event for Bluejacket and Classic Yacht Fleet.

2014 CYAA Winter Series Race 1

CYAA (Vic) 2014 Winter Series Entries and Handicaps

Winter Series Commencement Day BBQ

Attached are the entries and their allocated handicaps for Race 1 of the 2014 Winter Series plus the associated Sailing Instructions. The race is scheduled for a 10:30 am start on Sunday May 4. The race will be conducted by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club with Bob Tanner as Race Director on the HBYC Race committee vessel ‘Privateer’.

A small note to, hopefully, avoid some on water confusion. HBYC will be conducting 2 handed race with a scheduled start time of 10:00am on Sunday morning in the same area as the Classic Yacht race start.

As mentioned in prior notes the fleet will see the welcome return to Classic Racing by Renene with Kent Bacon skippering and his hard working crew. Tandanya with her forever smart looking skipper Bob Munro will be back with us and Scimitar under the helm of Damian Purcell looking her best after a serious mast make over. Check her out as she powers through the fleet. Scimitar has already racked up a noteworthy performance this season with a tight second placing to Cameron Doroughs  Bungoona at last week’s Sandringham Centenary Regatta. Claire with her skipper Richard MacRae, also returns to the Fleet and is ready for the battle. The Classic Fleet’s netboat Swan has been tied up dockside, RYCV, in an all set to go and re-joins the fleet under the helm John Payne with his heavy hitting crew on hand.

One other of our fleet has been in heavy start line killing work up mode for the Series. Peter Lloyds Marie Louise III on top of her 3rd placing at Sandringham also worked hard, with Peter McDonald of Pastime II and your handicapper crewing, held off all but Tony Legg’s Soling Paji II in yesterdays RYCV mid week pursuit race fleet. For those members who want to meet up with other members mid week, Peter Lloyds Marie Louise III is the place to be with an after race dock side soiree` on John Raff’s Kate. John reports his netboat  Jean is receiving a race ready makeover. Both net boats, Jean and Swan, are restoration works of David Beazley, sadly deceased, from the Beazley’s of Port Melbourne fame.

Over the previous weeks word has been received from the Classic Fleet skippers and crew, ”We’re ready for the series”. One dark horse for Race I will be Cyan. Say no more. Ettrick to be helmed by her new owner Gordon Tait is all set and will be watched closely. Don’t worry, your handicapper will be also watching and noting everyone, relax.

Charlie Salters Tumlare` Ellida is still in serious make over mode under the hands of Ferdy Darly and his shipwrights. Not for long reports Charlie, who will be featuring as crewing strength for that great man Roger Dundas on Avian this Sunday. Doug Jenkin sadly reports to inform us that Bluejacket, the Knud Reimers Albatross, in spite of efforts won’t be ready.

The Race 1 start of our campaigned hardened 2014 Winter Series Classic Yacht fleet has become one of the must watch events on Port Phillip. That’s the word from the HBYC Race committee. They now have to limit their start boat people numbers.

Current forecast for Sunday indicates a breeze that will bring the fleet home in good time to take in our series commencement BBQ.

2014 CYAA Winter Series Commencement BBQ

Sunday post race RYCV Lawn and After Deck
