2013/2014 Classic summer Series Race 7 (Pursuit) Entries, Start times and Sailing Instructions

Attached are the Sailing Instructions and the Pursuit race group start times for the listed entrants in the last race (Race 7) of the Classics 2013/2014 Summer series scheduled to start at 10:30am Sunday March 2.

Thanks to all the skippers and crews of our Association who consistently put in the time and effort to bring our Classic fleet to the 10:30 start line on those Sunday mornings.  With the series results still to be decided Sunday’s race will see some hard Classic Yacht racing action.

Good news for our Classic Yacht fleet is that we will see Claire with Richard Macrae on her helm racing with us again. Other news is the change of owner for Ettrick. Gordon Tait who crews on Mark chew’s Fair Winds II, now in Hobart, has taken her over from Doug Jenkin.  Doug has taken ownership of Blue Jacket, a Knud Reimers design known as the Albatross. Blue Jacket has been on Port Phillip for some time, she was well known for her consistently fast racing performance.

Another significant item of news is the most recent publication of our CYAA Magazine. Issue 34. This issue has now been printed and posted to all financial members of the Association.

Today’s the day when that large white envelope arrives in the mail and you sit down with coffee and cake to soak up another issue of our CYAA Flagship.

Following the example of how our Classic Yachts were designed and constructed using the leading technologies of the day, this record size 40 page issue of our magazine, for the first time, has used digital printing technology.  This change was bought about by the inclusion of Jennifer Cook from Waltzing Matilda into the CYAA Magazine Editorial team. In addition to Jennifer, our Magazine editorial team is headed up by Roger Dundas with assistance from your handicapper and, in particular, the long term and all important proof reading assistance provided to us by Roz Edmonds.  It should be noted that due to the proof reading qualification by Roz Edmonds, our magazine is treated as a document of record by archival institutions such as the State Library of NSW.

Contributions by our Association Queensland members, Ivan Holm of Westerly and Stuart Stubbs of Savona and in particular the Nigel Statham , manager of QCYC,  for the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Vintage Yacht Regatta poster, were co-ordinated by Greg Doolan of Sandpiper.

Articles contributed to Issue 34, cover Classic Yacht building and racing in Tasmania from the early days through to the very recent with some incredible pic’s of both era’s . As well, articles contributed by our members about a recent Tasmania circumnavigation and early Bass Strait yacht racing are there to give insights into what it takes to make these events happen. We also have a marineartist/cray fisherman story and a recap from an NZ perspective of our 2013 Cup Regatta.

A final comment from our magazine is from page 40. CYAA Membership. The offer is on the table for CYAA skippers to sustain and for Classic Yacht crews to sustain or take out CYAA membership.

Keep in mind, our Association sustains it’s credibility as Australia’s Classic Yacht Association , locally, nationally and internationally through your active membership.

Stay involved, stay a member. Become involved, become a member.

Back to Sunday’s racing. The predicted weather look set to give the fleet sea and wind conditions to finish off our 2013/2014 Summer Series with some tight pursuit racing.

10:30 am Don’t hold back. Sail hard. One hand for the boat and one for the rule book.

CYAA(Vic) Ted Kaufman sailpast and 2013/2014 Summer Series Race 6 Results

To the Pipes of David McKenzie our fleet of the day headed up by Mercedes III and supported by Boambillee and Tina of Melbourne lead the Classic Yacht Association’s  recognition  of the contribution by Ted Kaufman to Australia’s yachting,  in particular his leadership that bought about the winning of the ocean racing team to win the Admiral’s Cup for the first time and the emergence of Australia as a premier ocean yacht racing nation.

A note of thanks goes to all the yacht clubs that assisted the Association in their recognition of Ted Kaufman’s contribution to Australian yachting by the short duration lowering of their clubs ensign. A note of appreciation from the Association goes to Andy Doolan and his crew who bought Tina of Melbourne over from the RMYS in difficult sea conditions and to Sayonara along with all those Classic Yachts who came out to assist with the Associations sailpast. Thank you.

Attached are Sunday Feb 16 Race 6 results plus the series aggregate and Marie Louise III consistency trophy status.

Our race yesterday was a close run affair as the HBYC Race committee considered that sea conditions were past our proscribed limit for racing, not so. We had two freshly painted classic yachts on hand to race. Bungoona, all ready after Mike Hurrell had worked on her through the recent heat and Martini also all fresh and ready after the recent heat that had Doug Hem using all sorts of covers to create a Coolgardi to keep her from cooking in the heat. That concrete boat yard pavement in hot conditions is a killer on wooden hulls.

After a short race start delay, due to a rounding mark placing problem and in 2 metre seas, the fleet of 12 starters reached into the start line at 11:10am. 4 of us were blown over the line with all that was smartly resolved, the fleet settled down to a maximum hull speed battle over the 7.0 nautical mile course.

Mercedes III showed her Admiral’s cup winning pedigree by continually increasing the distance between her and the fleet to take line honours in 62 minutes of racing and was accorded the sail of the day. Her performance in the bays rough sea conditions showed off her Ted Kaufman pedigree and why she was the top ocean racing yacht of the country.

With the wind well above 20 knots this was the day when our fleet could compete on equal terms. Boambillee and Marie Louise III  duelled all the way around course with the lead changing a couple of time with Boambillee coming out on top. Trim was a magnificent sight, charging through the fleet to make up for lost time at the start and pick off the well sailed Serifa. Not to be by 2.5 minutes. Sadly we had to apply an additional 10% to Serifa’s recorded elapsed time.

In rough sea conditions and the wind spilling in the gusts the Tums showed the fleet why they handle Port Phillip conditions so well. A sight to see as only a minute separated Avian, Dingo and Zephyr as they passed over the finish line. Snow Goose fought hard to catch them, but not to be. While all the Tums going at it, Bungoona was working hard to chase down Martini, again not to be, Martini held off Bungoona by 20 seconds over  the line.

Corio Vertue was noted for her persistence to make the finish line and was accorded the sail of the day by the race committee. The sea conditions for the race were the first time Corio Vertue could have the recent work. Andy Indrans put into her tested in preparation for her passage sail to Hobart to take part in the 2015 Hobart Wooden boat Festival.

The only sad sight of the day was to see Cyan all set to go but stranded by adversity.  She was sadly missed by the fleet.

When the corrected time results arrived from the Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club and were announced they showed all that hard work from Bungoona, both on the hard and on the water, paid off.  Great result to have Bungoona take out corrected time honours for the race with Marie Louise III and Dingo close by. A feature of this race was the tight corrected times across the fleet . A 2.4 second spread between the 2nd  and 11th placing. The placing for 3rd and 4th had to go to 3 decimal points for a decision. Given the right sea conditions, our fleet looks to be evenly handicapped. Consistent racing is what bring this about.

Next race will be Race 7 on March 2, the final of the 2013/2014 Summer Series. A pursuit race starting from the RYCV marina. Start sheet is ready.

With March coming along the Geelong wooden Boat Festival, March 9, is the event with a large number of Classic Yachts from the Association attending. Following on will be the Queens cliff Maritime Festival Regatta on March 29.

With a break in racing over April our 2014 Winter Series is scheduled to start May 2. A Notice of Race and entry form will soon be issued.

Amendment to Sailing Instructions for the Classic’s 2013/2014 Summer Series Race 6.

Date of amendment Feb 14 2014

With the forecast sea and wind conditions for Sunday the allocated course for Race 6 will involve the use of the RMYS D mark. As RMYS are conducting the Jennifer Goldsmith  trophy race starting at 11:00am that will use the RMYS D mark, the Classic’s have requested HBYC lay an alternative floating rounding mark approx. 100metres to the northwest of the RMYS D Mark. This floating rounding mark will be yellow in colour with a horizontal black band.

To cover all possible course allocations I’ve amended the use of RMYS Mark A as well.

Discussions with HBYC will be conducted to determine if these course changes will be permanent.

Attached are the amended 2013/2014 Summer Series Course descriptions.

2013/2014 Summer Series Race 6 Feb 16

Attached are the Entries with their allocated handicaps plus the associated Sailing Instructions for Race 6 of the classic 2013/2014 Summer Series to be conducted by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club is scheduled to start at 10:30am.

Recently Ted Kaufman passed. Designer of Mercedes III, one of Australia’s most celebrated yachts and the person responsible for Australia taking 1st place in the 1967 Admiral Cup ocean racing teams event.

On Sunday, our Association President, Martin Ryan, Mercedes III, has asked our Melbourne members to assist the Classic Yacht Association’s recognition of  the contribution by Ted Kaufman to Australian Yachting and in particular ocean racing.

This recognition by the  Classic Yacht Association will consist of a short sail past through the RYCV marina based start/finish line in a west-to-east direction followed by a turn away to port for the HBYC race start area. Does not matter if not everyone is under full sail or motor for the sail past. All Classic Yachts racing or not, are invited to take a part in this recognition sail past.

The Classic Yacht Association of Australia sail-past in recognition of Ted Kaufman will be assisted by following yacht clubs.

Victorian Yacht Clubs
Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron
Royal Brighton Yacht Club
Royal Geelong Yacht Club
Sandringham Yacht Club
Mornington Yacht Club
Hobsons Bay Yacht Club

New South Wales Yacht Clubs
Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia
Middle Harbour Yacht Club

Queensland Yacht Clubs
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron
Queensland Cruising Yacht Club

Program of Ted Kaufman recognition sailpast.

9:55am The recognition sailpast program will begin with the listed yacht clubs lowering their clubs Red Ensign or National Ensign to fly at  half mast status.

10:00am Mercedes III will sail through the designated sail-past area accompanied by Boambillee and Tina of Melbourne to the skirl of pipes. Based on a weather dependent decision by Mercedes III , these three yachts will either take up station to receive signals from the Classic Yacht Association of Australia sailpast fleet or  proceed to the race start area.

10:03am Sayonara accompanied by Acrospire III will lead the Classic Yacht fleet sailpast through the RYCV Start line and then proceed to the race start area.

10:05 am All other Classic Yachts will follow the two Fleet lead yachts through the RYCV start and then proceed to the race start area. Order of passing the signal receiving yacht to be left to an on water decision at the time between skippers.

10:15 am All listed yacht clubs will resume flying their clubs Red Ensign or National ensign at masthead status.

End of Ted Kaufman recognition sailpast.

Classic Yachts taking part in the sail past to maintain a listening watch on VHF Ch 73.

Working the fleet up into a single file from the confines of a marina based muster area is a big ask, particularly if the wind strength is up. For safety reasons, the order of passing will be a skippers decision at the time.

Should the HBYC Race officials consider starters have been delayed by the sailpast activity a race start postponement signal will be flown.

This link is to a recently published  Ted Kaufman obituary. It contains the story why Ted Kaufman is important to the Classic Yacht Association.  http://www.theage.com.au/comment/obituaries/yachtsman-who-led-first-admirals-cup-win-20140209-32a8u.html

Other Classic Yacht Association Racing activity.

Phil Atkins, Trim, is handling the Association’s interfacing with the Sandringham Yacht Club Centenary Regatta Committee. The Notice of Race for April 26 will soon be issued. The SYC people have asked Phil for indications of Fleet size. So far we have 10 yachts intending to enter. Any additional skippers with intentions to enter the SYC Centenary Regatta drop your handicapper a note. Classic handicaps will be used and the course will be approx 7.0nm’s. Phil tells the trophies are worthwhile. Last year they were engraved model yachts. For those entrants that wish to take up the post race SYC hospitality offer, tie up facilities will be arranged.

An offer has been put to the Couta Boat Association to join us on the start line of this Regatta event.

The Geelong Wooden Boat Festival, March 8/9 will soon be happening. Take a look at the entry list at http://www.woodenboatfestival.yachting.org..au/assoc_page.cgi?c=0-9992-0-0-0&sID=315801

Current indications are that not many yachts will be overnighting for the Saturday Race to Geelong. As previously mentioned, the GWBF people will put on a BBQ Breakfast at Portarlington if the yacht numbers are there.

The Queenscliff Maritime Festival is now accepting registrations. The registration form can now be accessed at this link. http://www.maritimequeenscliffe.org.au/Final%20Program_Registration%20Form_2014%20Crews%20and%20Sailors.pdf
