Classics 2013/2014 Summer Series Race 3 Dec 1. Entries, Handicaps and Sailing Instructions

Attached are the entries, their allocated handicaps and Sailing lnstructions for Race 3 of the 2013/201 Summer Series.

We have an additional entry for the series. ‘Snow Goose’ a Tumlare’ bought back to racing condition by George Low. After a year or more of consistent restoration effort under the supervision of our well known shipwright Mike Hurrell. With assistance from Roger Dundas, of Avian restoration fame, to fit and fasten her new ribs and her mast rigged and tuned up by Keith Radcliffe of Ozspars, ‘Snow Goose’, a State Tumlare’ runner up Champ to Zest in 1950, is all set to take on the Classic fleet this Sunday.

10 Days to Departure

What a great day yesterday was. Exactly what Classic Yacht Racing should be about.

(Gordon Tait)

Having sailed our last race of the summer yesterday morning we spent the afternoon loading up Fair Winds with all the gear for a slow and steady circumnavigation of Tasmania. The trip is unofficially titled “The Fishing and Expensive Whiskey Cruise to Hobart” and so one of the first items on board is the Cray Pot very kindly leant by Tim Phillips at The Wooden Boat Shop. By the time this is strapped down the dingy is on board and the life raft loaded on the lovely expanses of teak deck space that we have enjoyed since getting back from New Caledonia start to disappear again.  Add the dodger and Philip Rhodes would be sad to see how we transform his beautiful lines into a cargo boat.

There is still a fair amount to sort out, and the provisioning to be done. How much we rely on the skills of the fishermen on board is a bit of a question.  Based on past experience we will be conservative in this regard….Crew of Six with only four sea berths is going to be cosy but I can’t wait!

Classics 2013/4 Summer Series Race 2 Results

Attached are

1.       Results for the Classics 2013/2014 Summer Series Race 2 conducted by the RYCV on November 17.

2.       2013/2014 Summer Series Aggregate Points Status after Race 2

3.       Marie Louise III  Consistency Trophy Aggregate Points Status after Race 2 of 2013/2014 Summer Series.

With a break in the recent unsettled and bleak conditions, consistent racing performance by ‘Trim’ helmed by Phil Atkins paid off with another first on corrected time. ‘Fair Winds II’ also put in a great performance to take out both second over the line and second on corrected time. After ‘Acrospire III’s’ small mark rounding error, George Fisscher and Michael Rhodes worked ‘Boambille’ hard to take out line honours by 7 seconds over ‘Fair Winds II’ and 21 seconds over ‘Acrospire III’.

Around the course there was a Tumlare battle. ‘Ettrick’, helmed by Doug Jenkin with his crew of Kath Solly and Di Ling, managed to hold every charge by Roger Dundas and Charlie Salter on ‘Avian’ to finish ahead by 54 seconds across the line for a corrected time result in their favour by 8 seconds.

The race start was a spectacular sight. For some the line was a line too soon. Many starters had to run down the line after being early thanks to “the outgoing tide” I’m told. ‘Acrospire III’, as usual, hit the line at the favoured end on the button and only once looked back, to see a missed rounding mark, oops. Consistent performances by ‘Martini’ and ‘Bungoona’ were noted. Joe Tuck and the boys never stopped pushing ‘Loama’ in conditions that didn’t suit her. ‘Marie Louise III’ was again the yardstick for the back calculated handicap calculations.

Your handicapper has run his ruler over the race and who gets it in the neck and by how much for Race 3 on December 1 has been decided. Although, the handicapper is still scratching his head over some results and wondering what was happening on some boats back there.

Doesn’t matter, with 16 starters our Classic Yachts gave us another great day of racing. That’s what counts.

This week we have our AGM on Thursday.

Some other items. Mark Chew is taking ‘Fair Winds II’ on a winding road style voyage to Hobart in 10 day’s time. The cray pot is already on board. The rest of us will be able to join in with Mark’s voyage by keeping tabs with the log he’ll be publishing on our website. Scott McDonald will set up a special website page for this event.

Doug Jenkin when cleaning out his locker found a pile of no longer needed deck hardware such as turning blocks and the like. Suitable for 30 to 40 footers Doug says. So contact him to find out more.

Next Race December 1
