2012/2013 Summer Series Results,Series Aggregate status and ML III Trophy score status

P2240672Attached are the results, series and score aggregate plus the Marie Louise III Consistency aggregate status.

After the postponed and confused start a fair breeze kicked that provided conditions that allowed all our fleet, with the exception of one, to complete the race.

Next race this coming Sunday, to be conducted for us by Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. Start and handicaps all prepared. Minimal changes made to allocated handicaps.

Classic 2012/2013 Summer Series Race 6 Entries/Handicaps and Sailing Instructions

Dear skippers and crews of the Classic 2012/2013 Summer Series Race 6

Attached are the entry list with the allocated handicaps for Race 6 and the Sailing Instructions.

The race on Sunday, Race 6, will be conducted for us by the RYCV under the direction of David Leroy, Race director. Keep in mind the RYCV Sailing Instruction booklet that contains the R Course descriptions and dated 2009-2012 is still valid to a date determined by the RYCV.

Last race was a disappointment, too many starters unable to record a finish. To minimise the chance repeat of this sad event, the time interval between the line honours boat finish time and the race finish time has been put out to 80 minutes. The time interval between the start and the first starter to finish has not been changed.

Our race fleet count for the series is continuing to grow. Last race we had a welcome appearance of “Kingurra”.  Stirring stuff, watching this powerful Classic yacht take on our fleet.  A feature of Race 6 this coming  Sunday is the return of Mark Chew’s “Fairwinds II”. After her recent “Corinthian Sailing”  soirée’s through several Pacific Islands  and her Auckland NZ based voyages,” Fairwinds II” rejoins our Melbourne classic fleet  to revisit those epic duels from the Col Bandy days.

One other Classic Yacht event for a mention is the Queenscliffe Regatta. March 22/23/24.

The Queenscliffe Maritime Museum and it’s Regatta is shaping up to be a big event for the Classic fleet. To date we have 6 entries pencilled in. Martin Ryan is co-ordinating the sailing arrangements to and return from Queenscliffeand,  the racing on Saturday plus the social events. All members are encouraged to become involved. It’s our signature ” bottom of the bay” event.  A no charge Queenscliff Marina tie up is provided to entrants. For those skippers and crew of Classic yachts not entering, this is an opportunity  to race on Classic yachts they try to destroy in our series racing. Such opportunities don’t happen often. A Classic bonding occasion.

One other small detail. The published aggregate score for the Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy was incorrect. Apologies to all concerned. I used the series aggregate score as the base to add the race 5 points to. There’s was no change to leading points scorer. How about that.

So with the ink scarcely dry from last weekends race results analysis, we’re off to again hit that start line at 10:30 am.

Regards to all

2013 Summer Series Results and Series Aggregate status after Race 5 Feb 17

Dear Skippers and Crews of the 2012/2013 Summer Series

Attached are the Race 5 Results, 2012/2013 Series Aggregate and Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy Points Score.

Considering there was a 9 week break between races, a fleet of 17 starters for our first race of the year presented another great sight of Classic Yacht racing as they went for the start line at 10:30 am. That said, with only six of us recording a finish, it was a rough day of out there. Particularly for those who battled hard all day to missed recording a finish by a small amount, Martini a fraction over a minute and Zephyr by two minutes. Sad to see so many starters not being able to finish due to wind holes constantly being found and having to work against an outgoing tide.

Even so, a great light weather performance by George Fischer and Michael Rhodes bought Boambillee  home to take out the corrected time honours with a 2nd over the line as well. Line honours went to Kingurra, with a 2nd on corrected time.  It was a welcome return to our Classic fleet by Boambillee after a long maintenance break. The same welcome applies to Kingurra with her first Summer Series appearance.

Acrospire III with Col Anderson had his smartly turned out crew working hard to break her out of that St Kilda wind hole. As a Classic yacht that in light conditions has to continually fall off the wind to keep her going and as the yacht that covers the most ground when beating, She did well to come home not far behind the delicately sailed Mercedes III .

Jim Hutchinson’s strategy  with Dingo  staying as far south as possible on the course, picked the southerly change and came home with kite flying to pip Marie Louise III by 30 seconds after an all race battle.

Scimitar was another welcome sight to be seen in out Race 5 fleet. Damian and Andrew Purcell fought all the way to stay in the race but that black hole of St Kilda did them in.  As compensation, the RAAF Roulette’s seeing their predicament, put on a special front row aerobatic performance for them. Cyan had a brilliant start but sadly the light weather also did her in.

The boys on Loama, being two up, without that great man Joe Tuck, worked and fought hard with Michael Mactavish on Serifa till the bitter end.

Although the results show a wide variation with corrected times, some ACH changes will be made.

A common thread through all the post race discussions at Royals was, how rusty we all were from the long break. Not a good way to be, a sharp crew is needed for racing. This point will be considered when dates for the 2013/2014 Summer Series dates are being determined.

Our next race, Race 6 by RYCV, is not far away. Next Sunday. The start list with the handicaps will be sent out by next Thursday.

Race 6 Feb 24 will  see the return of Renene with Kent Bacon, and Avian with Roger Dundas and Pip Todd to our fleet. Roger is presently assisting Jim Woods with the return of Windward II from the Hobart Wooden Boat Festival.

There will be another welcome addition to our Fleet for this race. From a long sojurn at the RYCNZ in Auckland, participating in the CYANZ Regatta and voyaging around the Pacific islands and the east coast of Aust, Mark Chew’s Fair Winds II has returned to Melbourne. A note has been received from Mark to pencil Fair Winds II in for the remaining 2013 Summer Races.

Till next Thursday

Classic Race 5 Revised start sheet

A short note about some additional Race 5 details to the Skippers and Crews of the Classics 2013 Summer Series.

The Hobsons Bay Yacht Club race committee vessel will the Alegria II. Bob Tanners yacht. HBYC race committee are conducting two club events that start and finish in the same time frame as our race. A committee vessel dedicated to our race will reduce the chance of race start delay problems.

Alegria II will be in the usual position around Port Melb. Channel Lateral 74. Prior to going on station she’ll be flying the large Classic Pennant and monitoring VHF chan. 73 for a call if you cannot find her.

We have an additional starter for Race 5, Kingurra. A revised start sheet, attached, has been issued.

Feedback has already been received about the race dates and longer race comments in the previous email. Suggestions made so far have been a race in January with a social theme and as a Festival of Sails warm up plus a 5-6 hour race. We could have a long and short course for this, it’s an opportunity for skippers and crews to race on other members Classics. In between our 2013 Summer and Winter series Hobsons Bay Yacht club have a race to St Leonards , May 11. They take entries from RYCV for this race. They would run a Classic trophy division. That comment applies to any of their races. The same idea could apply to RYCV. No comments yet received about an additional race in December.

Comments on the above suggestions or other Classic race format ideas welcome.

Keep in mind the Queenscliff Regatta March 23/24. This is another opportunity to race on other members Classic yachts in far different conditions to what we usually sail in at the top of the bay.

CYAA 2013 Summer Series Race 5 Feb 17 Entries, handicaps and SI’s

Dear skippers and crews of the Classics Race 5 Feb 17

Attached are the Race 5 Entries with their allocated handicaps plus the associated Sailing Instructions. Race 5, starting at 10:30am, will be conducted for us by the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club under the direction of Bob Tanner.

You’ll note the Sailing Instructions now refer to the ISAF rules for 2013-2016. When racing, the yacht is required to carry a current copy of the Yachting Australia RRS 2013-2016. The SI’s also note the use of the RYCV SI Book for 2009-2012. A note from the RYCV says this booklet issue will continue till the planned top of the bay infrastructure works are completed.

10 weeks since our last race, Dec 9. Maybe we need to consider a race schedule change . The break over the holiday season and the associated weather is generally not a suitable for any extended yacht maintenance. Maybe a better break between series is the go. Our present race schedule is derived 18 months in advance, using a complex formula, to fit in with the Race Calendars of the RYCV and HBYC. One other part of our racing scene is to consider longer distance racing. I’ll check out what can be done on both subjects and present options.

But talking of date’s one that sticks out is the Queenscliffe Maritime Weekend Regatta. March 22-24. The Regatta format is a Friday and Saturday night function and a combined fleet race with Couta boats on the Saturday afternoon. Stirring stuff with those tidal rips down there.

This is the time when the Association has to opportunity to reciprocate and sustain their relationship with the Couta Boat Association. More details about this event will be provided in the Race 5 wrap up mail. For those sailing down on the Friday a performance based trophy is being considered.

It’s time for no more talk.

10:30am it’s time to hit the line.

Regards to all
