Points status for the Marie Louise III Consistency Trophy (Posted 21.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of our 2012 Classic Winter Series

Apologies for not including the status of the series points for the Marie Louise III Trophy in the previous email that carried our race 6 results and series points status.

As there’s always a silver lining in every cloud, this error on my part, is an opportunity to remind our Victorian membership about the provenance of the Marie Louise II Trophy, previously known as the Presidents Trophy. The presentation of this trophy will take place at end of series get together after the last race of our 2012 Winter Series on Sept 9

Below is a reprint of the article, that describes the origin and rules for this trophy, previously published in the November 2010 issue of the Associations flagship magazine.

All the Associations  magazines, except the current issue, are available on our web site. They’re well worth a reread. The articles are timeless and many renew our appreciation of yachts that are still active and racing with us.

Classics 2012 WinterSeries Race 6 results and Series Points aggregate (Posted 21.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classics 2012 Winter Series.

Attached are the results for Race 6 Aug 19 and series aggregate points status with a one race drop now included.

Often the term “Corinthian Sailing” is used when Classic Yacht racing is promoted and discussed. That term could be used to describe our fleet in yesterdays race. From the show case pre-race manoeuvres alongside Station Pier and Beaconsfield Parade to the extra tight over the finish line battle, competitive racing in the Classic Fleet is now a known feature of racing on Port Phillip.

With 22 starters and close racing, our fleet made the most of the starting breeze to make and round the first mark in good order, in spite of the strong Yarra River outflow. After race reports of near misses on rig take downs and being caught on port showed how unusually strong the river outflow was.

Those who sailed with the outflow when the breeze died came out on top. For once a later breeze build up favoured the fleets backmarkers allowing them come up for a robust finish. A great scene with several of our fleet all beating to the finish Unfortunately 3 of our fleet were done, in as  the breeze rebuild line didn’t reach them in time. Commiserations to the Clive Moulday team on  “Blackadder”, Greg Hynes on his Stella “Jan” by 600mtrs and Andy Indrans on “Corio Vertue” by 200mtrs.

Our Hobsons Bay YC race committee made an after race comment about the sight of our fleet beating their way to a tight finish, It’s a scene they always wait for.  Yesterday they weren’t disappointed.

Comments were received about watching ,”Marie Louise” after some sharp crew action to avoid being eaten up by the fast finishing Craig Brown team on “Cyan”, followed, by a wistful gap of 0.01 of a minute, by Bob Munro’s crew Tandanya. Then followed by Ross Clark and Michael Williams working “Martini” hard by 0.65 of a minute and then “Bungoona” being tight sailed by Cameron Dorough’s team.

The sail of the day went to “Acrospire”. Reaching off with the river outflow set after the St. Kilda mark, Col Anderson, put an extra mile into “Acrospire’s” course to keep her sailing. Unfortunately the river outflow, even out by the shipping channel, was too strong for her to hit the shortened course finish line in one beat. “Ettrick” with Doug Jenkin keeping her from losing sail power in the occasional choppy conditions, came home with enough time to take out the corrected time honours.

Congratulations to Doug for the corrected time win and to Col Anderson for bringing home “Acrospire” to take out line honours.

The moment of the day was seeing “Bungoona” towing of two engineless yachts back home against the river set, along with another unknown yacht from our fleet also bringing  two engineless craft home. The river outflow set was no problem, but still hard work, for “Bungoona’s” strong 40 horses. An excellent example of our fleet watching out for one another.

Published results of yesterdays race

The 2012 Winter Series final race, a pursuit start, is scheduled for Sept 9 with an after race get together on the Royals lawn.

Looking over the aggregate points status, with weather permitting, a tight race to take out the series aggregate will be on hand.

Our Cup Regatta, The Notice of Race will be out shortly. The Friday Nov 2 Cocktail reception, Nov 5 BBQ and entertainment details being sorted out.

A quick comment on the special Classic Boat Magazine subscription to members.

The August print issue has been received and the digital September issue has been available since Aug 15.

2012 Classic Yacht Winter Series Race 6 (Aug 19) SI’s and entries (Posted 16.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classics 2012 Winter Series

Attached are the Sailing Instructions, Entries and their allocated handicap for Race 6, Aug 19.

Sundays race is designated as Race 6.

The previous Race 6 on Aug 5 was postponed.

Wind speed exceeding the Sailing Instruction 25 knot limit was being experienced at 7:30am, Aug 5 and forecast to remain at that strength at the northern end of the bay.

Race 6 (Aug 19) will be conducted by the Race Director of Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, Tony Dawson and assisted by Bob Tanner.

The race committee vessel “Privateer” will be on station, with an attendant rescue boat, in the vicinity the Port Melbourne Channel lateral No. 74.

Provisional race results will be published on our web site by Scott McDonald asap on receipt from HBYC.

An error was published regarding the date of the Classics last 2012 Series race, it’s scheduled for Sept 9, a pursuit with a BarB and series wind up get together after race.

The weather being forecast for Sunday looks favourable for us. Similar words were said before the Aug 5 race and look what happened.

I’ll save the latest Regatta organising activity stories for Monday, it’s all happening.

No Roger Dundas this race, he’s sailing from Noumea to Aust with Mark Chew on “Fairwinds II”

FYI our racing activity is closely followed by UK Classic Yacht people.

The Port Phillip waters we race on have been the locale for many historical, exotic and tragic events.

A report on one such exotic event is attached for some idle time reading.

So, it’s hit the line time at 10:30am on the dot next Sunday.

Classics 2012 Winter Series Race 6 (Postponed) Comments (Posted 6.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of our 2012 Winter Series

When two tugs are being set up to hold a car carrier car to the Webb Dock wharf in a Northerly you know that maybe, the right decision was made to postpone the Sunday race. Even the Royals committee boat ”Thorsen” was tied down in the hard stand pond in expectation of the big blow that didn’t really happen.

Irrespective of the disappointment, we harden up and live to race another day with our boats in one piece. Two more races to decide who takes out our Winter Series, Aug 19 and Sept 2. Then a break with Oct 7, the first race of our 2012/2013 Summer Series.

Note, as the August 5 race 6 was postponed by the conducting club, RYCV. Our next race, Aug 19, will be identified as race 6 and conducted by Hobsons Bay YC.

The 2012 Winter Series point score is still based on a one race, worst score drop. The 2012 Winter Series NOR Para 7.2 applies.

Moving On

The NOR and entry form for the Classics 2012/2013 Summer Series will be published after the Aug 19 Winter Series race.

The Classic Associations Race and Regatta schedule to the end of 2013 is now available for check out on our web site calendar. Courtesy of Scott McDonald.

“The Cup Regatta” organising continues.

Attached are our Cup Regatta publicity notices. The A3 poster and the double sided A4 tri-fold programme brochure for display at the keel boats around the bay. RGYC will put one on display tomorrow. A couple are in the Williamstown Info centre in Commonwealth Reserve. Put your hand up for a poster if aware of a worthwhile location available to tell the world about our Cup Regatta. The prints are better quality than the attachments.

The Regatta NOR has been developed, it’s with the Royals Race Director. The Regatta entry form will be available when the NOR is published. Generation of the Regatta SI’s and courses is taking place in co-ordination with the Royals Race Director.

Regatta handicaps? No problems. You’ll be looked after by that handicapper you all know and love.

Our Classic pennants, likewise are happening. Unlike the Flying Dutchman, they will arrive. The fortnightly status call tells us local football premierships also require flying regalia.

On the financial scene.

David McKenzie will soon be hitting on us for Subscription renewals.

Classics 2012 Winter Series Race 6 Aug 5 (Posted 3.8.12)

Dear Skippers and Crews of the Classic 2012 Winter Series

Attached are the Entries, Handicaps and Sailing Instructions for Race 6 on Aug 5 of our 2012 Winter Series.

The race will be conducted for the Association by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. Racing evolutions, under control of the RYCV Race Director, David LeRoy, are scheduled to begin with the warning gun at 10:25 am. The RYCV race committee vessel “Thorsen” will be on station in the vicinity of the POMC Lateral channel Mark 76.

Although our last race was shortened and half the starters were recorded as DNF, some handicap changes have been made. Overall, the relationship of the Classics assigned handicaps compared to those in the book I keep based the Yachting Victoria Handicap formula for local racing is close, overall fleet average of 1%.

Some other news, 1st 2012 Regatta organising activity and 2nd a member subscription offer from the Classic Boat magazine people.

The 2012 Regatta publicity poster and program have been printed. They will be displayed on the Royals lawn deck notice board after the results of Race 6 are announced. A reduced file size digital copy of these documents will be sent out the Victoria members with the Race 6 post race comments. The Regatta poster will be sent to keel boat yacht clubs around the bay for notice board display.

Next up is the Classic Boat Magazine subscription offer.

The Association was approached by Chelsea Publishing, the relatively new publishers of Classic Boat Magazine, with a membership based printed subscription offer. This offer is part of Chelsea’s campaign to develop their Australian subscription base. The Association Exec. took this subscription offer up as a bonus to CYAA membership.

The Association will not be an offer intermediary. All communication and fee payments will be directly between those interested in taking the offer up and Classic Boat Magazine subscription managers.

The first round of the offer is going out to the Victoria membership only. Our national members will be notified shortly by email. For non email members the offer will be posted out with the membership subscription renewal notice.

The printed subscription offer is $74.00 for 12 issues. The lowest priced offer ever offered by the publishers, anywhere. The publishers claim this offer will remain at that level, come renewal time.

The digital subscription to Classic Boat is $46.00 for 12 issues. Close to the publishers current introductory offer, it remain at that fee for CYAA members.

I’ve taken out both print and digital subscriptions to see how the process worked. Both offers send sign up confirming emails. No problems with the print offer take up. I’m happy with digital magazine display on both desktop and android tablet.

I’ve attached the promotion offer story from the publishers. The CB cover images attached to promotion letter tell the story.

Those images tend to give the impression the Classic Boat Magazine is for the big end of town Classic Boating scene and UK orientated. From my experience that’s not the case. Articles in every issue have comments that reflect direct connections to our racing fleet. Recently there were big articles on the CYANZ Regatta and Rawhiti restoration. As I stated in the attached letter, the Classic Yacht construction photos and comments found inside many Classic Boat articles were invaluable to me during the rebuild of “Alwyn”

For the Association, the offer provides editorial access to medium that can publicize our Classic Fleet racing activity specific to the Classic Yacht racing world on a global scale. This access into Classic Boat is in addition to the Sail World web based general racing newsletter we occasionally use.

To reflect the Chelsea Publishing’s commitment to this offer, two digital subscriptions have been offered as spot prizes for our 2012 November Regatta.

Next job!!

3 more sleeps to hit the line on Sunday at 10:30 on the dot.

Forecast, at this time of the week, appears favorable.
